Can't remember if I had commented before that some aircraft flew to Hong Kong on the usual SYD/MEL > HKG route and then stayed in Hong Kong for a period of time.
Pretty sure XFG has done this also.
Was unsure if it was WIFI /maintenance, but you seem to be confirming the case.
I was on VH-XFE 2 weeks ago from HKG-SYD and I noticed it too! Looks like the Wi-Fi is available internationally as well, although I didn't pay to actually try it since I was trying to sleep. Not sure whether there is coverage for the entire flight on HKG-Australia routes.
The pricing (for standard speed) was $9.99 for 1 hour and $24.99 for the whole flight, and high speed started at $11.99 for an hour.
I reckon I was just as surprised as you Sludge321 when I saw it, so of course I had to take a similar photo.
On the other hand, VH-XFG didn't have it on the outbound sector 3 weeks ago.
Can also confirm this as I used internet on VH-XFH on VA691 MEL-PER on Friday 17 january 2020.
Interestingly however the banner did not appear on the welcome screen.
Standard internet was free, however.
