I read somewhere about the time before departure that Qantas and Virgin "open" the options for a better seat.
Does anyone know what the times are for these airlines? Thanks in advance!

QF is T-80 generally, but this isn't set in stone.

Depending on factors such as load, status on board, route etc, the seat map may or may not open up for you.
I guess the best way of improving your options is to climb the status ladder.

I don't think Virgin opens up seating allocation similar to Qantas. Virgin web checkin opens 48 hours before flight.

Virgin was T48 for seating to open up. Not exactly sure these days, I have been WP for over 12 months. Keep in mind that due to VAs Economy X you wont get rows 3-5 unless you are WP or pay the extra fee.
