I've just flown BNE - Singapore - Perth
On each leg in J the IFE has been faulty. We couldn't get away on time on Sunday as the IFE needed rebooting, even after this is was still faulty, with only 3 movies on offer and a numberr of seats with badly flickering screens. On the way back last night the IFE was knackered again. The CSM was great and handed out duty free vouchers to J passengers, but I wondered if there was a broader problem.
I can hack shortish flights without the IFE, but am contemplating some long ones and don't relish the prospect.

I have had a couple of flights lately to HK where they have had to restart the whole planes IFE due to problems with the system.

I usually take my own entertainment with me though so isn't a huge impact

What aircraft were you travelling in? this year I've only been on the A330-220 with the new IFE and it hasn't skipped a beat.. but then like any technology they can play up..

I fly SYD-PER several times a month and about 4 of the last 6 flights have had IFE issues. Usually the whole plane, but once was just my row. I wouldn't mind so much if it was just going to Melbourne, but am getting very tired of the Perth leg not working. And frankly a voucher to buy magazines does not make up for it. I would prefer that they fix what is obviously an ongoing problem.

Oh and I was pre-warned about the one this weekend and tried downloading something to my iPad in the lounge to watch on the way over, but of course the Lounge Wireless couldn't even check my emails let alone download anything....

What aircraft would you be on, not the 747 by any chance?

Thanks Serfty I will try that.

And the aircraft vary mannej. One was a 747. I was in the first row economy and the IFE could only play videos on loop. Of course I couldn't put the screen up and we were stuck on the tarmac for about an hour or so before take off. thankfully when I was in J on the 747 the time after that it worked, although it had to be reset before it would. The A330 didn't work this week, and I think the others have been older coughpy aircraft. Some have been working but the screens flicker so badly you can barely see them. The first 747 experience prompted me to buy an iPad.

I was on QF772 (PER-MEL, A332) on a JASA on 27 July, and we were warned that the IFE had problems on the previous sector, and probably wouldn't work for ours. In truth, I never even tried it, and just watched the flight path display while chatting to my neighbour.

Today, I had a letter from Ian Jackson, Head of Customer Care, apologising for the IFE failure, accompanied by a $250 QF voucher.

It certainly was a nice surprise, and I do appreciate it. But it does make me wonder: did every J passenger get a voucher? Just the WP/CL ones? What about the poor souls in Y?

QF772 was operated by QPE on the 27th of July. It seems as though the IFE on both the 747's and the 333's do have their problems. They are the same system aren't they.

Any chance on the next big refit they can upgrade the systems on both the 747's they intend to keep and the 333's to that of atleast what is in the 332's if not the 380's?

The 9 B744's to be kept will get A380 spec AVOD (panasonic) when the refit begins later this year. I can't speak to the A333's.
