Hi all,

My friend booked flights from Sydney to Ballina with Virgin Blue, but booked the flight under my middle name and sirname rather than my first as I never use my first name. I called Virgin Blue to ask if they could change it to reflect all of my forms of recognised ID ie Elizabeth Anna Burnett rather than Anna Burnett but they said no as name changes aren't permitted with a GO fare (it's not really a name change, more of a name alteration in my opinion!). Apparently I have to cancel the current non refundable booking under Anna Burnett and rebook (and pay for) a new flight under Elizabeth Anna Burnett if I want to travel on that flight.

If I check in online and only take a carry on bag, do I have to show ID at all? Apologies if this sounds dumb but I am new to Australia and have only flown domestically once.

Thanks!

Hi Anna, welcome to AFF :D
I have exactly the same problem as you ie a first name I never use. I have never had an issue with domestic flights being booked in either or both of my names. You can be asked for ID at check in or whilst boarding as long as your middle name appears on your ID I think you will be fine. No way would I cancel a flight and re-book to add in my unused First name!

Tiger are the only carrier the checks ID (occasionally) to webcheckin passes.

I have many times put my first and last name around the wrong way and they (Virgin) have just turned a blind eye to it really.

Travelbugged,

Welcome to AFF. :D

If possible do your check-in on line and then the chances of anyone actually asking for ID will diminish to almost zero and the problem will go away.
