I need some inspiration, any suggestions?

Yangon
Bali (scuba trip)
Zurich
Johannesburg
Hawaii

Yangon - but presumably some more of Burma too? Ballooning over the temples of Bagan not to be missed. Plus Mandalay ....

It's close to Oz, infrastructure is now pretty good, as is the trappings of western tourism ( credit cards, wi fi), e-visa etc.

There is a link to my trip report on my signature area.

What time of the year are you thinking of going?
April to June next year. I know Yangon will be hot but that works best with my work schedule

Vietnam? Africa parks?

Usually Im already planning by now but not feeling motivated. Would love Switzerland but hubby wants somewhere hot(ter).

Yangon was hot and humid in late February, personally I wouldn't want to go there during the wet season May/June, same with Laos, but we are finding the humidity harder to deal with as we get older, ideally the best months there are November to February.

However Myanmar is a long thin country and the very southern part appeals, we spoke to some people that had time in Thailand on the islands near Ranong and loved it, it's where Myanmar ends in the south.

I just googled 'diving' Ranong and this came up: Diving in Ranong | PADI Travel and A One Diving Team | Thailand And Myanmar Dive Trips Based In Ranong, Thailand

The Mergui Archipelago sounds good.

Vietnam is really hot in May through June. It’s easy to fly your way from north to south starting at HaNoi. HaLong Bay is amazing. Some nice beach resorts in the central area or the highlands at Hue. Then south to Mekong and Ho Chi Minh.

The Mergui Archipelago sounds good.

We are just back from three weeks split between the Mergui Archipelago and Vietnam.
A super trip.

Very hot and extremely humid everywhere but no rain.

We had been in Myanmar previously but not south of Yangon the first time. Tourism has plummeted there - for obvious reasons - and the locals all had stories to tell of family and friends losing their jobs and having a tough time financially. We were treated with enormous generosity and friendliness.

It was our first time in Vietnam, so our itinerary covered the more well trodden path of Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Danang, and Saigon. Much more touristy, of course, but plenty of opportunity to see something of “real life” also. The food was a standout highlight throughout. :)

Some years back, we had a wonderful experience in a private game park bordering the Kruger. One of our best trips ever - in a very long life of travel :) - but it was in warm, dry weather.

Have had quite a number of visits to Hawaii, covering most of the islands. Interesting, if you’ve not been there, particularly the volcanic areas, but rather too “tame” for my liking.

Zurich is lovely and has plenty of charm. But it’s in quite a different category from your other options, so that would depend on your priorities. I’ve been there in mid-summer, when it was fairly cool (and in mid-winter, when it was stunningly cold!), so if you are looking for warm weather, it would not be reliable.

Happy planning. :)

I mentioned before my husband started wearing "funny hat" during winter - to protect his ears/not get sick, especially with swimming and diving/cold winds ect.

He found this at the Heinken factory and had to have :D

Please don’t take him to Bali. He will buy everything Bintang. Not an impressive look.

Isn’t the food in Vietnam wonderful! We were blown away. Especially in HaNoi and the French influence. Had the best Vegetarian meals in HaNoi. Hoi An, that’s the place I couldn’t think of. Fantastic tailors there. And yes it sounds like we travelled the same path as you. As did many Aussies.

Not sure about the weather at that time of year but the Gentleman and I did a self drive tour in Namibia in August 2013. Saw some great wildlife in Etosha and Damaraland. Unfortunately we didn't have time to go to Botswana also (as we visited the gorillas in Rwanda instead) but would also be an option.

Ideas for places not already mentioned that would have warm weather in April/May - Arizona (including the Grand Canyon) or French Polynesia
Arizona/Canyon/Utah absolutely on our list but at the moment, politically, we just want to avoid the USA for now :(
