I hate Sydney (airport security) international

I have thought long and hard about posting this thread before biting the bullet today.
Over the years I have noticed a steady decline in the quality of the experience in trying to negotiate the security personnel at SYD.
My most recent experience has sent me over the edge. On a recent trip to Lombok (via Jakarta) with Mrs GPH (we needed some R&R). We flew BNE - SYD to take advantage of the F Lounge then on to CGK etc.
We flew down the night before, so we weren’t having to rush, when it comes to the laborious process of getting through airport check in and security, we are still using a wheel chair for Mrs GPH since her rather serious car smash last October, usually this is (in any other airport we have used since October, here and overseas) a speedy, efficient and hassle free experience. But not in Sydney. I have come to expect generally rude and dismissive attitudes from security staff (no, not all of them are this way) but on this occasion we were being escorted by our QF person and I was following behind, with all of our travel documents and of course the now redundant express lane cards as we have our own express lane for wheel chair pax. When I was abruptly and rather rudely pulled away from Mrs GPH and told to go and queue up. I suggested that I wasn’t going to be separated and the security guy then became immediately aggressive. Knowing that these guys are a power unto them selves, I then tried to reunite Mrs GPH with her passport etc (as is our usual process when being separated in an airport) and again was aggressively told off, saying we didn’t need to be holding our own documents and that we needed to do as we were told. . This caused distress to Mrs GPH and she told the security guy to back off and not tell her what she could and couldn’t do in regard to her passport and other documents. So the speedy process was now slowed to a snails pace as I had to wait in line in the non express lane. So Mrs GPH and the QF attendant were left languishing airside while I went through my paces.
Australia is not a police state ..... YET, and while airport security isn’t something to ridicule or trivialise, the sydney experience is getting out of hand. Maybe it’s just bad luck, but every single time I transit through SYD to an overseas destination, I am pulled out of the line and put through extra screening (body scanning). Maybe I look a little suspicious? I don’t know. Or maybe it’s just bad luck. But I accept it and continue on through.
I much prefer the more friendly BNE experience and F lounges notwithstanding, I am resolved to avoid Sydney where possible.
For the record, the Indonesian security screening experience was akin to being treated like royalty in comparison to SYD.
I’m sure there are many who find SYD a different experience, but for me, it has left a bad taste in my mouth far too often for it to be a random problem.

On the flip side, wheelchair experience in South Africa, Kenya & Rwanda was faultless. Quick, efficient and courteous. Sydney international airport security has a lot to learn. For the most part rude and incompetent. We’ve decided SYD FLounge is almost not worth it. Will go via MEL in future.

My thoughts with security is just suspend all thought of logic, emotion and go with the flow. Become an automaton. You just know deep down you will never ever win the discussion. Pick your battles. Security isn’t one of them. Yes it sucks. But until a politician gets the rude treatment it will never change. In Adelaide the other day they removed an aerosol spray. It was capped. He said it couldn’t go through the scanner. I asked why as I watched another similar item go through. He said ‘because it cant’ just like my two year old would have said. I was about to argue the point then said ‘whatever’ and walked on. That’s the phrase I say when I think someone has just given me BS. Thankfully my mood was improved when I saw the lady repeatedly stop under the screener causing it to beep. The QP was pleasant.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Not a big fan of SYD Int airport as well, unfortunately too many airlines fly their best metal exclusively from there so I find myself connecting more often then I’d like to.

If you fly QF and only care about F lounge visit then MEL is much better option. Apart from that non-existing views the lounge is just about the same and connecting from domestic will be much more relaxing experience.

My approach with security in all airports around the world is to approach them like a "naughty child", and be very liberal with the phrase "I am sorry"....I never argue with them. Works so far ;)

One of the many reasons I love going through the FCT in FRA is that security there apologise to pax for the “inconvenience” (which is like 2 minuets) :)

Thats what happens when you outsource "essential" staff and training is watered down with different accredited providers who churn bodies through their training process.

Lets be honest, some of the people waving the magic wand and checking the xrays look similar engaged in their duties as the guy behind the counter at BP, asking if you want any chips, chocolates or coffee today. Power can be heedy to those that dont ordinarily have it so just grin and bear it.

Where was the QF person in all this and why didn't they speak up on your behalf? What a coughpy experience though :(

Reminds me of a time at HNL where the TSA agent tried to make me go one way with my bag on a different X-ray belt. I politely reminded him that the TSA guidelines advise you should keep an eye on your belongings at all times. He relented.

I rebooked ADL-SYD-DPS when MEL came online last week to avoid the SYD immigration experience plus that awful bus. I think SYD F lounge is better though.

Am not "defending" the staff at security, but I will say this:

I go through an international security screening on average about once a week. So for somewhere between 5min and max an hour, each week, I have to watch a queue of travellers who seem to want to do everything in their power to stuff up the smooth flow of pax through security.

I am a PATIENT person. I know, intellectually, that many of the pax are very infrequent travellers and the whole process must be uncomfortable and alien and mysterious to them. But even knowing that, I still get attacks of internal rage watching them.

And I only suffer an hour max a week. Imagine what it is like to work day after day with this. That security staff don't physically slap people demonstrates they are way more controlled than I am.

I just went through SYD international security. My following comment is NOT racist in any way, but I could not help but notice that almost all staff appear to be new immigrants. This makes sense to me - it is SUCH A cough JOB that anyone who can do anything else, does.

I have a lot of patience for the staff. I have had cough jobs before also.......

I agree that SYD is one of the worst I've experienced. A lot to do with the staff, but its aggrevated by the truly poor layout of the place.

But, I usually just suck it up, think to myself "yes sir, no sir, 3 bags full sir...." and get through it quickly. They can make you day a living hell if they want to, so best just let it go.

Yep, this is a police state and the security excuse comes out all the time, even with private security.

It's a people skills job, if they don't have it or don't like it, then like any job move on. But why would they move on, pay with little accountability for their attitude as they just roll out the security angle yet again.

Very unfortunate GPH - my sympathies to you and Mrs GPH.

I too can't help but wonder what the QF escort was doing

I've actually been quite lucky travelling ex-SYD (pretty frequently). Security has almost always been friendly and courteous., I often share a joke with them. The border staff have been more gruff lately - barking out questions and orders from behind the smart gates, no explanations or common courtesies. Treating everyone (including frequent travelers like me who actually know what to put into the smart gate reader) like 3 year olds.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I still think LHR T3 is the worst I have experienced. But SYD is definitely in the top few of worst experiences. The time Mrs Oatek and I decided to take a Christmas pudding to the family in London a few years back sticks in my mind. Obviously the guy on the scanner thought is was a dodgy organic lump, and the security guy appointed to search was a complete basxx_d. But the pud still tasted darn good on Christmas day in London.
