I’m definitely a little ‘OC’ and over the years havedeveloped a great fear about what previous hotel guests have been doing withtheir hands before touching the hotel room TV remote control. Yuk!
So I’ve taken to hitting the local convenience store, after checking in, to purchase a trusty can of Glen 20 to then give the remotea quick spray. This has now developed into a quick spray on the aircon switch, light switches, lamp switches, door handle, fridge door etc etc. Definitely atad OC!
Then I recently watched an episode of Gordon Ramsay’sHotel Nightmares. He got out the trusty old “CSI blue light” to show a hoteliersome pretty filthy carpet stains.
So now my ritual is…
1. Do the Glen 20
2. Always wear the hotel slippers after showering.

Does anybody else suffer these mild OC behaviours, anddoes anyone else have any tips on keeping hotel rooms hygienically, and moreimportantly staying fit and healthy while travelling abroad?

Just a little? Good grief - next you will be telling us you lock your toothbrush in the hotel room safe just like some other clown on here does prior to him leaving room each day.

Obviously each to their own - but I have travelled to all corners of this planet and never taken any extreme precautions other than bottled water and not eating off street carts or in dodgy local restaurants - I also believe a nightly alcohol transfusion can lead to a long healthy life!

My Hygiene tip is not to even think about the lack of hygiene in a hotel or you will never feel clean again.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

A good friend did a lot of business in HKG.Always had the same suite at the Peninsula. If his wife came she always brought a bottle of Dettol with her to make sure the bathroom-every little bit of it-was clean.
A good deal of evidence is emerging that our obsession with cleanliness is a cause of many illnesses.

+1 for the obsession with cleanliness may be the reason our immune systems struggle. Also agree that if you think about hotel rooms too much, you'd never travel again!

When we were young, we were exposed to many different hygiene concerning things - such as eating dirt, food straight off the tree or out of the ground without washing it, patting the dog then eating ..... the list just goes on. I say now that the exposure early on made our immune systems pretty much able to cope with anything. The only absolute we travel with now is the handwash you can use anywhere, anytime. So far so good - we eat off the carts, drink in the local bars, use dodgy toilet facilities, and even work closely with displaced Burmese families on a rubbish dump in Thailand. These fabulous families offer us food (which we eat as it would be very rude not to), and even though we're surrounded by flies, the food is pretty amazing and we've never fallen ill. :)

Wow, you get to stay in places that supply slippers.

Matt

I find the thought of hygiene on an aircraft much worse than in a hotel. But still I fly in them!

In hotels, knowing exactly how cups and glasses are often cleaned by house keeping, I might boil up some water and err... give them a hot rinse out.

The rest I don't care much about. Or don't think to care much about.

Could not be bothered, and Im pretty sure Ive never caught anything from a hotel room. Ive stayed in some pretty dodgy ones too when travelling across the States....

You sure about that blackcat20? You caught Tommy - that's about as dodgy as it gets!

Wash your hands thoroughly and regularly with soap.

None of you obviously had the experience of staying in the Middle East in the 1980s... off the tourist trail.

Amazingly my GI tract survived at the time.

Happy wandering

Fred

But I picked him up in an airport, not a hotel room :p (two years ago today at that)
Seriously? Surely the ultimate AFF relationship then. :p
Cant get much more serious - the moment they stopped texting each other across the table at AFF functions I sensed wedding bells!

I'm happy cause I'll be best man - penegal is pissed coz he only got the page boy gig - that'll be a laugh - have you guys seen his legs? :D

simply wiping the surfaces with a cloth or tissue would be as effective as spraying antibacterial products. wash your hands before eating and avoid touching your eyes, nose etc and you're covered. doesnt have to be OC just common sense.
