Have recently booked 2 one way award tickets using AA miles on Malaysia Airlines, SYD - CDG $73 in taxes, then CDG - SYD $389 in taxes. What is the reason for huge difference in tax, AA agent not able to tell me?

Bit odd, i find when booking a QF award on Qantas the surcharges i pay elsewhere to fly back to Australia are almost always more, and quite a bit more than what i pay to fly Australia to somewhere... Maybe its because the ones i've been looking at are EK etc, but the surcharges and all always seem smaller coming back to Oz...

AA recently was charging fuel surcharges on MH award tickets incorrectly. The next day they admitted the error and said they were refunding those who got charged. Maybe this is what happened to the OP's case. Taxes and fuel surcharges for CDG-SYD coincidentally comes close to $389.

CDG has the same rule as LHR, the airport charges sort of luxury tax on top of normal taxes, no matter which carrier it is. If you can avoid these two airports from Euro, then the surcharge will drop.

I would have thought the difference that the OP is seeing would be the UK APD, I didn't think that CDG had the prohibitive departure taxes related to the length of the first leg that LHR has? Unless this has recently changed?

Was wierd as today I went to pay for IST - SYD leg on Malaysia Business class AA Award ticket. Originally told it would be $395, but today charge was only $40! Don't know why but I wasn't going to argue!

AA has fixed their IT system, as before, no fuel charges will be imposed on its awards ticket.
