Dear AFF'ers,
I am after some advice on how to get to and from Vancouver in early July, back in early Sept please. I have a dodgy back, my Dad bad knees, and my Mum just can't sit still for long!
Hence we can't do long-haul in economy class, but could do a short flight to somewhere in Asia in economy then the long stint to Vancouver business class; price needs to be not-crazy though. A few-day stopover could be cool too. I thought could also do part of the trip on a cruise, e.g. to Hawaii then on to Vancouver?? Arhh! I don't know! Any ideas, please? Will be departing from Adelaide.

Whatever you do, look at it soon, as flying to Vancouver in July is their summer (price/availability of seats).

As well as via HKG then Cathay, think maybe go via Singapore or Bangkok to Japan or Seoul in two economy legs, then onwards to YVR in business, or maybe to Hawaii in business then LAX or SFO and onto YVR as two economy hops? (But if you do this last combo, and obviously fly US airlines for the flights there, buy via US booking sites, not any Australian ones)

Well J from Australia to YVR is going to be around $6,600 if paying for an airfare. Given your long list of ailments, it might be worth simply paying that for the convenience of a direct flight with a bed.

If you can make it to Bangkok, China Southern has return J fares BKK-CAN-YVR for around $3,200 each. Korean Air and Hong Kong Airlines also have some reasonable fares ex HKG.

to Hawaii in business

I forgot. if you do start looking at Hawaii, don't forget Alaskan onwards from there. They are based in Seattle and offer good fares to there and onwards to Vancouver. They actually have a sale on now. Find airline tickets, low airfares, and discount flights | Alaska Airlines

You can also buy their miles at good rates (especially when you get the bonus miles), and they have partners like Cathay and Qantas you can book through.

Buying a whole bunch of their miles and then use for the whole trip on different airlines might be a strategy except its a bit late to get their 'miles' seats in the period you are looking at. If of the slightest interest, go over to some Alaskan threads and check it out, then ask questions. :)

CX (Cathay Pacific) is showing at about $4500 HKG-YVR rt. Trouble is I wouldn't want to put @scharon or her parents on the night flight home from HKG.

Oh, disclaimer: I have known @scharon for years (or maybe that should be decades) :)

Some of the mainland Chinese airlines are not badly priced. Having never flown with any of them, which are the ones to avoid?

I haven't seen EVA Air (BR) mentioned yet, but I flew them YVR-TPE-SIN last year and the first leg in particular was excellent. The second was on a Hello Kitty flight, and, well, you probably need to be the right age or in the mood or not many hours into a trip home.
