Hi All,

I am helping a friend out with a travel booking, SYD > FCO in July.

On expedia the flights are $2700 return for the dates they want and the route is this:

SYD > HKG - either CX/ QF
HKG > FCO - CX

Now when I try and book via the Qantas website to get status credits + points it routes via LHR adding an extra stop and costing $3300.

I tried manual bookings Syd > HKG on QF site and HKG > FCO on CX site and I got the price to be $2700 however they don't want separate bookings so they can have their baggage tagged the whole way through.

Is there a way to make the above booking via QF all in the one booking?

You can still obtain SC and points with flights booked via a travel agent so you could try one?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Actually? I've always been under the impression you have to book directly with the airline for SC, travel agent fares didn't book earn SC?

This is life changing news if correct haha.

Edit: Just found out they have a Qantas business account too and want to book with Qantas to add to their spend.

You are confusing airlines and hotels

Hotels: have to book with the chain to earn points within the program or make use of status benefits.

Airlines: can book with anyone, so long as you book into a points-earning fare class. Some airfares also do not come with luggage and no amount of status will help you, but that shouldn't be an issue in your case.

No. What you are trying to do is impossible.

$2700 is pretty high in economy if that's what you're trying to get.

I guess your life is changed :D

SC's are earned on fare class and flight#.. the selling agent.. be it QF online, a OTA or a shop front TA (eg Fright Centre) do not affect the earning of SC's or FF points

at least for now :)

No problem booking with a TA.

July is absolute peak season for Europe travel (their summer). these prices do not surprise me THAT much. Now true I would have expected $400-$500 less, but given the dates I'm not shocked.

Of course in low season you could get to FCO at 2 for that price :D

Is it ok for them to fly to FCO via DXB or is HKG a must?
If happy to go via DXB then through tix with QF flight number all the way... max earn of QFF points and QF SC.
Avoids LHR too.

Never seen CX carry a QF flight number and QF does not fly HKG to FCO...
So even if booked via QF telephone sales or TA, going via HKG with CX will see a lower QF FF and SC earn rate.

A J-class flight from HKG to FCO should earn 7,400 QFF points and 120 SC even with a CX flight number. QF does not compete with CX on this sector, so there should not be a points / SC discount (unlike HKG to Australia).

QF and CX used to codeshare on the HKG-FCO before the EK tie-up.

just to note, on the travel agent thing: you can earn SC and points, but you need to check what type of fare they book, I'd guess they go for the cheapest fare by default, which may mean you cannot upgrade and get the least SC plus harder conditions on cancelling/rescheduling. So you can book with a TA but make sure they know what you need.
