I want to travel MEL-LHR on 2 June next year SQ228 + SQ322, returning on 11 July SQ321 + SQ227. I was hoping for Premium Economy all the way, but can only find any on the SIN-LHR LHR-SIN flights (and priced in S$, not AU$). I'd settle for that if it can be booked on the same PNR, and use my scanty award points for the MEL-SIN return in Economy, but can see no way to book the whole journey on the website. Am I likely to be able to book the mixed-class return by phoning the Sydney KF number or does mixing classes across sectors break some SQ rule? I'd like to have some idea where I stand before making that phone call or topping up my points as I don't have quite as many as needed (42,500) in my KF account.

Thankyou, John. In the end, based on the advice I received in my phone call to SQ, I did it online and although I didn't achieve all I wanted, I am happy to settle for what was possible. What made a difference was that, with effect form 1st June, upgrades from Economy to Premium Economy are available and can be done online using points, provided PE seats are still available on the required flight. And the whole ticket must be booked first in Flexible Economy before doing so. Unfortunately, SIN-LHR (SQ 322) was not available in PE on 2 June, but I did manage to securea seat on the upper deck of the A380 for that flight. For SQ 321 on the return it cost me just 27,625 KF miles to upgrade so I didn't need to transfer more.

What was surprising was that the rep on the phone told me that SIN-MEL (SQ 227) on my return date was waitlisted, but I found it was still showing as available online. I took that as an indication that it was becoming full, and I therefore proceeded with the whole booking straightaway.

I did note the following in the Additional Information section at the end of my upgrade notification, which may be something new:
If changes to your booking are not made online

Please note that any changes to your booking, such as change of itinerary, change of travel date(s) and/or change of passenger name(s), made through KrisFlyer Membership Services, Singapore Airlines reservations or ticket offices will mean your booking will no longer be eligible for the online redemption booking discount.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Well given I have recently done exactly this and didn't lose my online booking discount I also suspect its new. If its true and they enforce it would have to suggest that is fairly dodgy, as my recent experience and the reason I did call was that it was not possible to make any sort of change online and the online system directed me to call up. Charging when you could do it online and don't I think is fair, if they charge because their system does not allow online changes it isn't IMO (noting this seems to have changed somewhat recently, I have made changes online in the past).

It's just possible that it will apply only to flights from 1st June as that's the date when Y to PE upgrades become possible.
