Hi,

I will be arriving to Avalon (AVV) airport in Melbourne via Airasia at around 9.20am in Jan next year. What is the average time now to pass thru immigration and collect your bags? I have another flight to catch at Melbourne Airport to Tasmania. I have not booked the Jetstar flight yet. I was thinking either 2.30PM or 4.00pm. If I can make it out of Avalon fast enough i would surely prefer the 2.30pm flight.

Can anyone who has recently flew into AVV via Airasia, kindly advice how long it took to clear customs and get out of the airport?

Any advice from anyone would be welcome.

Regards,
Dino

How were you planning to get from AVV to MEL? It’s about 40mins with clear traffic (so usually ~ 1hr!). If there’s an accident on the M80, can be longer......

I booked a private cab which can ferry me from AVV to Mel. My concern is the immigration as I heard it can take up to 3 hours. Is that still true?

Nah, I don't think it takes 3 hours. AVV is a small airport. My mates flew in from KUL to AVV in July this year. The flight landed at 2000 hours and they met me at Arrivals around 2030 hours. I think the best case is 30 mins and worst would be 60 mins. Not 3 hours :)

They were travelling with carry ons only, if that makes any difference to your question :)

Wow, that's fast. I do have check in baggage which I will need to retrieve but maybe add another 30min for that? Hence if my plane lands at 9.20am, I should be out by 10.30am. My ride picks me up at 11am I should be at Mel by 12pm.

Next would be, for Jetstar, how long to queue to check in baggage at Melbourne Airport for domestic flight to Tasmania? If I take the 2.30pm flight, I have to be at the gate by latest 1.30pm.

:) Technically, yes, what you mentioned looks like a realistic timeline. However, to be safe, add another 30 mins, just in case something goes wrong.

As a suggestion, you may also try and take a seat as forward as possible on your incoming AirAsia flight, so that you can alight relatively quickly and go to passport control

Check if you are able to check in online for J* so that you can proceed directly to bag-drop. You save some time there, in case there is a queue to check-in

J* had automated bag drop facilities, so as long as a baggage scanning thingy is free, you can use it. You'll need your boarding pass before you can do a bag-drop and hence my recommendation to do an online check-in and download the BP

If you plan to take the 2:30 to TAS, you'd need to be in the airport, checked-in, at least by 1:30. You'd need to be at the gate 20 mins prior to departure.

Note : I'm sure you'd have thought about this, on both AirAsia and J* starter fare provides only cabin baggage allowance between 7 and 10 kgs.

I would not be concerned so much about the time to clear immigration/customs at AVV. I would be more concerned about what you will do if your flight to AVV is delayed. I expect it is more likely that a flight will arrive 3 hours late than there being a 3 hour delay in immigration/customs at AVV.

The concern about immigration processing time at AVV is legitimate, as there were some well-reported delays when the route first started. Perhaps the airport has since got its act together, though?

JQ used to fly from AVV to HBA direct. If they still do that could make your transit even easier.

There was 2-3 hour delays in the first few months due to minimal staff. They were installing smart gates I think they might have done this now.

Seat yourself as close to the front as possible otherwise if worried to ensure fast exit.

Most likely cause of delay: traffic on the Princes Fwy and/or Western Ring Road. A few months ago I was catching 6pm international departure coming from Surf Coast and left with the aim of reaching airport (under usual conditions) at 4pm. I reached there at 4:50pm, due to roadworks and an incident that blocked most lanes.

Many thanks for the advice. The more I read the more feasible it is for me to take the 2.30pm J* flight

I'm praying hard there is no delay.

Good suggestion. The Airbus 330 can sit 377 passengers. Sitting in the back is a no no. I will get my group to book furthest in front of the plane.

Omg... I hope no such congestion in Jan2020
