I've experienced both good, indifferent, and down right rude service before.
On my last flight from Gold coast to Sydney, I felt one of the male flight attendants could have turned down the sarcasm.

I can't say I've ever had rudeness on any domestic Aussie flight- yep- including Tiger.
I haven't had indifference from Virgin- & the lounge angels are divine!

For reference, work pays for 95% of my domestic travel, so I'm always in Y

when flying PE with them, good on flight, very good in lounge (syd). when approached my a virgin lady in SYD T1 who was doing promo work signing people up for a competition, she asked are you flying with us today sir? i said no i prefer qantas, well lets just say it was all downhill from there

Flew SYD-MEL with them about a month ago. Nothing extraordinary (I was in the cheap seats) but definitly nothing that would make one consider taking one's money elsewhere next time. Weren't pushy about trying to get me to buy food on the plane either, which is a plus. Seemed to be fairly warm and hospitable to the other passengers too whilst remaning professional. As I said, would give them my business again if I was flying domestic (and international if they joined *A).

Should also give credit to the check in staff who let through my slightly overweight check in bag (about 23/20 kgs). I don't think Virgin employs them directly, but still they do reflect well on the company.

I have had some really indifferent crew who seem to go through their paces but do nothing more, to crew that really cared and went the extra mile. As I have said in other posts, whether its QF or DJ, an indifferent crew I give the benefit of the doubt to, we all have a bad day, a good crew, well I always take the time to provide feedback.

I have to say generally I find the QF crew to be more professional but also more rigid, while the QF link and DJ crews seem to go the extra mile and seem a bit more fresh in their approach, maybe thats a sign of their ambition?

i have to agree with you here, although not flown qantas link for a while. I have however noticed on QF of later younger staff who seem more enthusiastic too. and I have noticed it rub off on the older crew..

In most States the QF lounge staff are much more professional than their counterparts at Virgin. At least, that's my experience.

Is that the lounge staff (as in airline staff) or the catering staff?

My experience is different though I believe the DJ catering and cleaning staff sometimes need a razz!

I have found DJ crew to be nothing short of exceptional.

Most QF crew these days are rather "average" and it is the exception when you find excellent crew who seem to be making an effort.

(the exception is the A380 crews who are as a whole - exceptional!)

OTOH DJ crew seem to genuinely enjoy their jobs and go the extra mile to 'make an effort' and it comes through as great customer service.

DJ lounge catering staff are another issue.

In a similar vein to others I've nothing but good things to say about DJ staff... it's often the differentiator between them and QF staff IMHO

Careful with the generalizations! Some DJ catering staff may be average but others, such as the Adelaide catering staff, are absolutely fantastic - table service etc. The same goes for crew, I think there are many older crew on both qantas and virgin that are more bubbly and friendly than any of the younger crew. I had a flight last month on DJ and I would estimate the CSM was 60+ and one of the other male cabin crew were 70ish - it was one of my best flights. Both of them were ex-ansett I latter found out after talking to them.

WOW - on DJ? This is the airline that, a few years ago had no-one over 35 in their cabin crew!

I've found the DJ crew get older and older with every flight I take - while they have the experience, it doesn't really fit with the young, fresh, vibrant and progressive worldwide Virgin brand?!

I couldn't care less what they look like. I've been on a couple of VA flights where the CSM has looked 15+ years younger than the FA beside her, and talking to the FA I learned that in both cases they were middle aged women looking for a change of lifestyle who had joined within the past twelve months. Fantastic service from both of them (and their respective CSMs too). Based on what was written in the press about DJ FA interviews, 5+ years back those ladies wouldn't have even got a look in. One was a former body builder!

Freshness and vibrancy should not be linked to youth.

I drifted away from QF a few years ago when I found the staff mostly indifferent. Their attitude appeared to be one of wanting to be anywhere else but on this aircraft and, I wish this shift would end now.

I travelled DJ when they first started and was not happy with the silly jokes but I must say that since JB has taken over the helm attitudes have changed for the better.

I find Virgin staff seem to enjoy their job, are very professional and enthusiastic. I don't think I have had a bad experience with VA.

Certainly agree with Bill, The lounge cleaning staff need a cattle prod applied from time to time

Well the lounge staff at BNE and MKY were certainly nicer than those in the QPs I visit.
On board.Never had a bad FA.Occasionally indifferent and some times superb.

DJ lounge staff (at desk) , big thumbs up, DJ contractors - average to below average and even downright rude.

I've never experienced rude myself. But unfortunately, in my experience, the level of service the contract staff in the lounge give is pretty much on par with what you get from staff employed in similar roles anywhere in the Australian hospitality sector - which is lousy. And that covers everything from manner to deportment. One exception (amongst a few) is a barista in SYD I've come across a couple of times who is very enthusiastic and engaging.

Desk staff have been, without exception, brilliant. In the MEL lounge one Saturday afternoon one of the desk staff walked the floor, taking coffee orders and delivering them.
