So I currently have 320 SC and I have until 31st August before my membership year ends. To earn Gold status, I'll need 380 SC more.

I currently have one flight next week back to Melbourne from Rome that will net me 70 SC, and if I include the 50 SC free once I hit 500 SC, this will mean I will need 260 SC by 31st August if I want Gold status.

Question 1:- So I've got a Melb <> Seoul return flight in two weeks returning on the 30th, however work booked this flight for me so I don't know how much status points I will be getting from this. Is there a way to check this based on my ticket class etc? I would call in but being overseas with the coughpy internet doesn't make it easy.

Question 2:- Assuming my flight to Seoul nets me 120 points (just going by what I previously got from a Japan trip), I still need 140 SC, so I'm thinking of upgrading either my flight from Rome > Melb next week to business class, or the return flights between Melb <> Seoul. Any insights on which is the better option for me to take and how do I easily find out how much SC I'll be getting? I can't find any where on the My Bookings area. Is calling them really the only way?

Thanks

Frequent Flyer - Flying Qantas & Partner Airlines - Points Calculators - Earning Points

Hi Tingss,

Welcome to AFF.

In Manage My Booking, you should be able to expand the flight details for it to show you the "Travel Class" next to the "Economy" will be a letter. Use this letter on the Qantas (or Partner) reference table in QFF to determine whether you are travelling Discount Economy etc. Then using the combination of Carrier and Ticket Type you can use the Calculator to give you the number of points and SCs you will earn.

Your flight from Rome will not be on Qantas - even if it carries the QF Flight Number - and regardless of where you are travelling to you will not be able to upgrade on anyone else's metal; also simply upgrading does not net you increased SC/Point earn - if you want to earn Business Class SCs and Points you will need to cancel and rebook in that class. My work would not allow me to do this, even on my own money, yours may be different.

You could look to do a Status Run but you really need to weigh up whether it is worth the $$$ to do so based on your perceived travel pattern next year. PM me for a very good TA who would know exactly what you need and would be able to offer options.

Sorry it's not necessarily the news you wanted to hear but hope you still around here, but a warning ... its addictive!!

Regards,

BD

How badly do you want gold? With the current double SC promotion you could get the 140 SCs with a simple MEL/SYD return in J.

Very badly, but mainly because I misunderstood the whole system and didn't realise they reset to 0 each anniversary year, making me want it even more so now lol. Just feels like such a waste not to just earn an extra 140 points.

Didn't realise there was a double SC promotion. Haven't been looking at my newsletter folder while on travels. Sounds like the most affordable way for me to do it. Thanks for the heads up

To calculate yourself, first find the fare bucket for each segment as described by @BD1959

Then for flights with non QF flight numbers, look here to find the earning category for that fare bucket: Frequent Flyer - Flying Qantas and Partner Airlines - Fare Categories

Now go here to locate the earning for the route/distance and category: Frequent Flyer - Flying Qantas and Partner Airlines - Earning Qantas Points

For flights with QF flight numbers, look here: Frequent Flyer - Flying with Qantas & Jetstar - Earning Categories for the category and here: Frequent Flyer - Flying with Qantas & Jetstar - Earning Qantas Points for the earning.

Hi Tingss,

Your flight from Rome will not be on Qantas - even if it carries the QF Flight Number - and regardless of where you are travelling to you will not be able to upgrade on anyone else's metal; also simply upgrading does not net you increased SC/Point earn

Certainly this is the case for points based upgrades, however there’s is the option for cash upgrades on EK sectors.

EK allows cash upgrades up to the point of airport checkin. The question then is whether these type of upgrades increase the SC haul.

However EK flights (unless QF codeshare) do not earn SC.s It's unclear if an EK paid upgrade to a QF codeshare flight will result in an upgraded (eg: Business) credit being accrued to QFF though. I'd be wary..
