Melbourne looks set to lose one of its signature luxury hotels, with the Hilton on the Park likely to close after operating for nearly 40 years in East Melbourne.

The Hilton's lease over the hotel complex expires in late 2014 and owner Brookfield Australia is advertising the property for sale with vacant possession.

It would be sad if HOTP closes, especially since it is in such a convenient location compared to HSW.

Hopefully it wont go the way of the previous Hilton, although not being owned by Nauru is a benefit!

It would be awful if you were affected by these four enhancements!
Qantas enhancing MASA.
Hilton enhancing Macquarie Card.
28 Degrees enhancing cash advances.
HOTP being converted into high end apartments.

I am so sorry to read this thread. I have tried HSW a couple of times but didn't like it much. I switched to HOTP and far prefer HOTP. The location is perfect for me with such good public transport options. This, in effect, devalues my HHonours points.

Stayed here last weekend for the AFL GF.....after the match, it only took 20 minutes to get from my seat in the grandstand to my room....great location for attending the MCG, tennis etc....within a 10-15 min walk of eastern CBD as well. It will be a shame if it closes. ..

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

And it has a pool. :(

It does too! You can even drown a mouse in it. :p :D   :D :p

Don't say that, my first HSW stay is later this month :|

I personally have had nothing but good or better experiences at HSW though reports from the regulars tell of inconsistencies. For a while, HOTP offered not only cheaper rates but also better service it would seem (plus a pool ;)), despite the property being a bit more dated.

I never stayed at the HOTP after my sole stay in 2008. I always preferred the location of HSW compared to HOTP. HOTP was more dated and barring a set of recent improvements and a significant drop in the average room rate (especially compared to HSW), it never really registered on my radar to consider HOTP again until recently.

Either way, to see HOTP go will not be a good thing at all, especially for the Hilton brand. Room rates at HSW could really blow up after this.

HSW is such an inoffensive hotel with that most unappealing color scheme trying to be all things to all people. No reds that would upset the Asians (ex)..... HOTP more friendly on the eye IMHO

It will be a shame to see it go. I certainly prefer it over the HSW.

Maybe we should put an AFF consortium together, with guaranteed exec lounge access. :D

Out of curiosity, I wonder what it would be like to stay on the very last night available, since one day they'll be telling somebody the expected date of closure, surely?

I could see the lounge being drunk dry at the end of an F lounge run.

I don't recommend that!! That is exactly what infinity and I did on AFL GF eve....we flew down on JQ35....cabbed it to HOTP just in time for drinks in the executive lounge...serfty joined us, and ~2.5-3 hours later, we stumbled out and back to our rooms.....I was so bloated and sick that nite that I almost didn't feel like going to the GF the next day!!!

Gotta pace ya self sonny!!

All but confirmed on the phone today by my Hilton account manager. Put the question to her and without saying yes, confirmed it was news being circulated... "But HSW is offering very competitive rates recently" :)

On another note, she also mentioned that Parmelia Hilton rates are expected to drop significantly in the new year, bringing them into line with the rest of the country.

And check out time can be when ever you want.
