Hi guys,

Looking for some recommendations for decent hotels for 3 nights each in London (somewhere around Kensington/Victoria/ish) and Paris (really don't know where!).

Mrs MatF and I will be there in December, so it'll be off season. We're looking for somewhere decent, safe and clean, but it doesn't have to be fancy! Neither of us know either city well at all. Ideally around A$200-250/night I guess.

All help, alternatives and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Mat.

I stayed in Kensington recently at the Tara Copthorne Kensington, really near High Street Kensington tube station. Can’t remember the exact price but it was decent and was a nice hotel, though you’d want to be facing away from the train tracks, as we were.

I think the Malaysian cabin crew was staying there too.

Rydges in Kensington was quite good - have stayed there 3 times - and (or at least the used to be) a Qantas hotel, so get some benefit there.

As for Paris, have stayed in a marvelouss traditional French hotel in St Lazare - will have to find the exact name and address for you

Very traditional Parisian hotel - not far from Trinite and the Opera House - just 4 minute walk to the Metyro station - and some marvellous bakeries just on the doorstep (and restaurants). Prices start from 140 euro - we will certainly stay there agin on our next trip to Paris in 2011.

Many thanks guys - this has given SWMBO something to research, and that is always a good thing in my experience.

We're also spending a couple of days in HKG on the way back, so I guess we should start thinking about that a little too!

Have a search as there's lots of threads on HK hotels.

Basically you'll need to decide if you want to stay "on the island" or on the Kowloon side. That'll make it easier to select a hotel - both being on the island and kowloon have pros and cons.

FWIW we had a great stay at the Intercontinental Grand Stamford when we picked up a room on sale (HK$1100) and got upgraded to a harbour view room.

Speaking of HK...

Mmmmm, needs more BBQ Pork Buns......

Ahh doc - so good to see someone else with impeccable taste! We've stayed at the Grand Stamford twice now - book a Club room then you get internet, plus breakfast, afternoon tea, happy hour, a quiet lounge overlooking ther Harbour, late check-out etc. When I stay at Sheraton hotels, in contrast, find their offerings in Clubs VERY slim pickings!

FWIW:

Luna and Simone Hotel in London. Five minutes from Victoria Station. Number 24 bus stop across the street - it goes anywhere you would want to go in London. Cheap and cheerful.

Hotel de Nice on the Rue de Rivoli in the Marais in Paris. Funky and well situated.

CityView or Hotel Salisbury in HKG. Both YMCA Hotels but particularly comfortable and good value.

But, when the shareholders are paying, it is a whole different list!

Not quite Kensington, but The Sumner Hotel in Marble Arch is great value for London - good sized rooms and 5 minutes from Oxford St.

Thanks again guys!

At this stage I think we're leaning towards:

  • The Premier Inn Victoria, London - seems to get good reviews on tripadvisor, and SWMBO likes the location (SWMBO found it)
  • Hôtel Langlois in Paris (thanks JetLagged!)
  • Possibly going to splurge and stay at the Intercontinental Grand Stamford in HKG, but not toally decided as yet.

Cheers!
Mat.
