HKG & NZ Fare increases on QF

Just got this through...

[FONT=&quot]Qantas has just announced fare increases on flights to Hong Kong and New Zealand, with new levels applying for sales in Australia for tickets issued on or after 28 Jan.

For Hong Kong, First Class fares will increase by up to 4%, while Business Class fares will rise by up to 3%. There's no increase for Premium Economy fares, while Economy fares will also be increased by up to 3%, with this change effective for travel on or after 01 Apr 2010.

On the Tasman, Business and Economy cabin fares - including wholesale fares - will increase by $10 each way for travel on or after 28 Jan 2010.

The carrier said all existing bookings must be ticketed on or before 27 Jan 2010 or the increased fare levels will apply. Group fares on the routes will also increase for tickets issued on or after 02 Feb 2010.

Qantas are becoming more of a joke each day. I can already see SQ, TG and CX are much more attractive for travel to Asia and even Europe....

...and yet people keep booking on Qantas.
 
Many QF decisions are hard to understand.

QF must be enjoying strong load factors to these destinations if they can warrant fare increases.

I also used to book Qantas/BA until I tried the other side. I think the reason was to get the SCs but now that I have found cheaper options for SCs I no longer need the international legs to be on QF/BA and I can go with which ever airline is cheapest.

Doesn't that negate the benefits of status if you're hitting WP but then using other carriers, esp. non OW for your long haul travel?

Yes and no. I mainly need the benefits of status on the domestic SYD-BNE weekly commute. For international flights I still get some form of lounge access but lose the priority check-in and additional luggage allowance. The main benefit I needed from Qantas was pre-allocated exit rows and this was taken away recently. The rest is very much even.

Although in saying that my recent experience with SQ was positive. In SYD went to the OLCI queue and did not wait long. Had golf clubs (9kg), luggage (12.9kgs) and carry-on. I was asked to weigh carry-on and it was 9kgs. The lady at check-in asked me to take something out of carry-on and put in checked luggage. And bags we also checked through to BKK even with overnight stopover in SIN.

Coming back checked in at BKK with golf clubs (9kg) and luggage (17.9kgs, don't know what happened to increase the weight) and not a word was said.

I can't speak for flights to NZ, but on my 9 trips to HK in the last 6 months (and 10th trip begins tomorrow), I have been op-upgraded 3 times, forced to purchase Premium Economy due to no Y available twice and experienced >90% load factors on all other flights. On many occasions I found no Y seats available for several days, including direct and via SYD and MEL.

So yes, I would say they are not struggling on the HKG routes.

Tomorrows flight is not full but looks reasonably heavily loaded. But not much chance of an op-up this time. The return had to be booked in W as there was no Y or T available either direct to BNE or via SYD or MEL for 2 days either side of my chosen travel date.

You would expect QF planes to be full, considering 12 months ago they had a daily 747, plus 3 330-200 each week from Melbourne to HK. Now it is 5 - 747 plus 2 - 330-200s per week.

Thay is a lot less seats.................
