Hi guys, I have a flight SGN - HKG, arriving at 14:20 and then HKG - SYD departing at 21:35. Flights are booked on separate tickets which means i'll have to collect my luggage and check in again.

From what I've read, this should give me enough time to catch the train into the town and have a bite to eat/wander around, but I don't really want to carry my luggage with me. I'm flying with QF HKG to SYD, will I be able to check in my luggage early?

check-in is 3 hours prior at HKG, there is no early check in - before you leave the transfer area I would go to the qantas transfer desk at E1 and see if they can reroute your baggage without it being collected

otherwise you could just take your luggage on the airport express and immediately check it in on arrival at Hong Kong Station so it went back to the airport ahead of you.

depending on how many in your party you may be eligible for group discount tickets which can be purchased from the service desk on the platform.

yohy?! - great, thanks a lot for the suggestions. Never knew that the Airport Express luggage service existed, what a genius idea! Seems like this is the way to go.

For the first option though, I'm flying with VN into HKG, does this matter? Is it a common request for bags to be rerouted between airlines?

it never hurts to ask - it is common for baggage to be routed between carriers and HKG has a lot of facilities to support this as it benefits their reputation as a hub. will be at VN's discretion if you have 2 seperate tickets.

i would ask at check-in in SGN (showing QF ticket at that time) and if unsuccessful at HKG transfer.

You should be able to use the transfer desk to transfer luggage. I have done it many times although not for that long a connection.
