Hey all,

I am flying to MNL via SIN and HKG with overnights at both connections. I have been to singa a few times and have somewhat of a plan of what i am going to do (eat).

I have not been outside the CX lounge when in HKG.

Any recommendations for both locations for a 20 hour jaunt? And particularly in HKG, the best place to stay to maximise my time?

Cheers

What's your budget and interests? I'd recommend staying at the Intercontinenetal in Kowloon. It's cheaper than the Peninsula and I think has better views. Watch the light display (think it's 8pm) from your room or the bar and then jump on a star ferry and go to the mid levels for dinner. Plenty to choose from. Food is never hard to find inHong Kong. Enjoy

In HK - I usually stay in Sheung Wan (on HK island not Kowloon) which just happens to be conveniently located very close the Airport line train station "Hong Kong". Sheung Wan was a very 'hip' area when I was there but it was close to some great street food type places and famous places to eat - duck/goose, yum cha etc but at night it was also good for a drink out or just a wander around bars / streets, or if your with your wife/girlfriend there are some boutiques or artisans spruiking their hipster wares. I stayed there recently on a 1.5 night stopover and its was great. So overall you don't need to move around too much and can walk everywhere. If you want to head up to the peak then the tram to there is easy to access also.

If price isn't an issue then you can stay somewhere like Ritz Carlton which has incredible views however it's in Kowloon and more or less surrounded by shopping centres.

In Singapore I like the Naumi Hotel or intercontinental hotel + area of the city as I can walk around most places quite easily like little India or the Arab street area, or it's a cheap cab ride to the hawker centres - but Singapore increasingly becoming one of my least preferred stopover cities as the hotel prices have gone through the roof. I used to always stay at the Crown Plaza Airport hotel at the airport for really short layovers and just taxi to East Coast Lagoon or train into city when the prices were decent (around 150SGD) - and they allowed an "8 hour" 11am - 7pm room which was more like 12+ hours as I'd checkin around 7am and out after 7pm for a midnight flight. If you do go this option there are two hawker centres close to the airport that are decent - one north of it (forgot its name) and the East Coast Lagoon one which is outdoors / open air. But by the sounds of it you have plenty of time so a night in the city one be my preference. Apparently the new Hyatt is really good in SIN and you would be close to the Newton Hawker Centre and Orchard Road if that's your thing.

In terms of price, i am going to say 4 star; $200-250 a night, which i know doesnt get me much in singa.

I have done alot of touristy things in singa (zoo, night harbour cruise, chilli crab). I usually stay at the carlton city hotel, which is about 2 blocks from my favourite hawker hall. May want to explore other areas though.

I am travelling solo, however will need to buy gifts for the wife, other wise i will never be able to travel again! Sheung wan sounds perfect.

Any preferences for hotel in Sheung Wan?

I stayed at an AIRBNB when I was in that area, but there is a hotel called OVOLO NOHO that I was going to stay at that was in the right spot slightly lower down. The Sheung Wan I refer to might technically be called Tai Ping Shan or Mid Levels but the area that I like is basically very close walking distance from this Hotel and you might even be more central to other areas.

If I didn't stay an an Airbnb I'd stay here - quick random date check on booking.com in Mid May showed $168 a night

I don't like Sheung Wan at all - the area 'close-ish' to Central is known for its dried fish shops, and the area smells accordingly. Even your hotel room can small heavily of the same!

Wan Chai is much nicer and as close if not closer to Central depending on which part of Shenug Wan you decide to stay.

pkenty of good 3-3.5 star hotels in Wan Chai in the AUD100-150 range. Metropark Wan Chai as an example (Metropark Hotel Wanchai Hong Kong | Lifestyle Business Hotel) but plenty of others, including with harbour views.

in Hongkong, stay in Chungking Mansion, its a great spot, and close to everything.

If you're in HKG for 20hrs just find somewhere close to MRT that's clean. No need to have a grand hotel room as chances are all you will be doing in it is sleeping anyway. Better to explore HKG ...

If you want to be cost effective and convenient, choose a hotel near the airport express bus route. A few weeks ago I stayed at the Novotel on Nathan Rd. the bus stop is just across the road and gets you to the airport quickly. Some good markets (Temple Street) just across the road also for food/gifts and an MTR station one block away. Don't go out of your way to see the light show across the harbour.
