An old friend has invited me to spend the weekend in Vientiane (Laos) after a business trip to HK in July. He has suggested CX to BKK and TG to Vientiane, but there are a couple of other carriers such as Vietnam Airlines via Hanoi who also go there.

Any suggestions, warnings, anecdotes gratefully received!

Thanks

Any reason why you wouldn't just stick with TG the whole way? Would be easier to have it all on one ticket. It's not cheap though.

You could save money by flying to Udon Thani, thailand and travelling by land to Vientiane. It will add a couple of hours to your journey in each direction.

I have been getting around to visiting a friend in Vientiane for a while now, so I'll watch this thread with interest. The TG from BKK was the suggested way for me also.

I believe the logic was that TG all the way was often quite expensive.

Was in Laos last year - great place and Vientiane is a great city - small safe and friendly. If you are there for more than a weekend, can't recommend Luang Prabang enough for a few days.

Flew back to BKK on TG economy - old 737-400 but fine for short flight and could check through for my TG connection to SIN. Don't recall seeing any options direct in from HK - but possibly some from china somewhere? and Vietnam as you mention. Don't think there's any oneworld options if that's important. Think there were also flights when I looked on Bangkok Airways from BKK who I've heard good things about. Seem to also recall Air Asia but that's from KL which is a bit of a diversion from HKG...

I actually flew into Laos on Laos Airlines ATR i think - possibly the craziest seat coverings I've ever seen, but nice friendly old fashioned if unpolished service - just like Laos all over! If you can find a way in with them I'd recommend for the experience.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
