A thread for discussion of the Hilton Honors program.

Quick question on status changes.

obtained diamond through a status match and won't requalify as diamond. Wondering when the status downgrade will occur, on the 12 month anniversary or at the end of this calander year. Have a stay first week of Jan at HSW so hoping it an anniversary change over, kicks in mid April.

Thanks in advance.

Memory is not what it used to be but I think its the 1st April it will change. When did you get the status match.

From what you have written, it suggests you gained the status match this calendar year? If so, you should retain diamond until 31/3/2018.

Just did some googling and yes looking like ill be diamond until 31/03/18. Thanks all for the responses, looks like ill book a few more hilton stay in the next 12 months.

This has probably been asked before and I have done some googling but would prefer to hear it from the experts on here.

May I (as a Diamond) book a stay for family and not show up? I fully expect them to not receive any diamond benefits but can I book them with the Honors rate? I would prefer to not risk my status to save them a few $.

I do it all the time, and they get the benefits. Some of the hotels know them by name/sight and are more surprised when I actually stay there.

I agree with Cynicor. I do it semi-regularly and never had an issue ... diamond benefits have always been extended as well as points/nights/stays being earned. Some hotels know my family and some not. I would advise listing the additional persons name in the booking and adding a note that they'll be "checking in first". I don't fib, I just neglect to say I may not make it (let's face it, my plans frequently change, and I just might turn up)!

This may not be the right place to ask - but I have a recollection of someone posting the $ amounts in US and AUD that is required to get to the top tier in each of the major Hotel programs (eg, HH Diamond, Le Club Platinum and Hyatt). Can someone point me to that?

Interesting. Wouldn't such a list be very subjective? I mean HH diamond can be free, but then again, it may cost US$12000 depending upon an individuals circumstances.

I meant raw $ if starting from scratch and doing it by points only. So in that scenario US$12000 is the figure, thanks. I should have been clearer.

It's the figure to do it via base points, but stays is usually considerably cheaper. I recently had a H-CNS stay on a sale rate of AU$122, so 30 stays at a similar rate would put diamond at a cost under AU$4000.

I too would like to see the comparison to which you refer, but I guess the other factor is how much benefit each competing tier actually provides. Hilton does pretty well but for an example, I recently had some stays in POM where I spent 2 nights at the Crown and 2 nights at HI. The Crown stays were priced higher (I bought Club rooms each time), however they were cheaper than both the HI and HIX by the time breakfast was factored in and evening snacks and drinks (2 of us staying). Often many of us try convincing ourselves that status benefits aren't really worth much, but those stays did actually prove to me that all the Hilton breakfasts and lounge access I enjoy is worth a reasonable amount of money. I have no idea about SPG or Marriott, but Hilton beats IHG and Accor all hands down in my book as far as value for a reward program goes and I tend to believe Hilton also offers better rates than either IHG or Accor, but how much the $ spend to achieve top tier is, I've never really bothered to work it out as my most popular haunt (CNS) is really a choice of Hilton or Accor.

Cheapest way would be 30 single night stays mattress running.
Probably could get it for under US$2000 with the right use of lower end properties (outside Australia given we have no Hamptons or HGIs), but average spend would be much higher than that.

Trade-off between money and time. I will likely retain my Accor Platinum status on points, but unlikely to maintain HH Diamond this way - even though i usually add extras such as room service, spa etc. Have no need or desire for 30 stays in my current circumstances. And I'd personally never do a mattress run unless very close.

And I know a person who typically spends a week at Hilton Niseko in January where you can bill lift passes and hire to the room, which gives them a big start on points qualification.

Is that me Moa999? Made requal to diamond on base points by end Jan once...
Now I can't ski in niseko cos there's no good BC but it was great for the status.

Gday

Any idea if HH member tier benefits are received if the booking is made through a corporate travel booking company at work?

Pele.

May depend on hotel but I've never had a problem in a few Oz hotels (BNE, ADL and HSW from memory). I or my EA at the time would always call the hotel direct after the booking to make sure they had my details.

Most here report that the tier benefits are still granted (though technically the answer is they should not), but less often is the stay/night/point benefit awarded. Sometimes luck is positive, most times it's not. At least, that's what I've gathered from the reports.

Does anyone know if there is a way around the below situation:

I am looking to book a two-bedroom residence at ZQN as I am planning to travel with my partner and another person. However, the price difference between booking for two people and three, for the same room is around $140. Is there a way around paying the higher price while getting free breakfast for all three guests? I am a Diamond member. Cheers.
