As you know Hertz charges $12/day for automatic tolls on their cars. I declined it this trip.

I went Lane Cove -> M2 -> party -> M2 -> Lane Cove -> Harbour Tunnel.

so 5 toll-road trips.

So does that mean Hertz will try to ding me $30 per notice ($150) plus the additional toll roads?

Any idea/suggestions on how to try and get the toll charge put back on after the fact?

You have 3 days to pay the tolls before the road toll companies chase you. Just sign up retrospectively using roam website or one of the other ones - far cheaper that way!

And if it was 7 days ago?

Hertz don't charge $30 per notice, it's $16.50 per rental plus the tolls.

I would call the toll company (13 7626) with the plate number and hope for the best as they may have a few options before the notice gets to Hertz.

Wow that's steep. I always decline the tag as I avoid tolls but didn't realise the cost was that high.

Wouldn't it be easier to get your own tag if you hire a car frequently?

The problem with having your own is that if you carry it around with you, and either use a taxi or another hire car company that has its own tags (e.g. Avis), you'll pay twice if your tag is picked up as well (unless you can shield it... I'm not sure how well-shielded it needs to be for it not to be picked up).

Oh OK. So a tag is not something that can be easily turned on and off?

No. I had one in my bag in a cab and heard it go off! Next toll, I sat on it and had my bag on my lap as more shielding and it still went off!

Expensive cab trip.

I won't swear to it, but I believe that using aluminium foil will act as a shield. Maybe a double layer,wrap securely.

I remember when I had to return a roam toll tag by post they told me to wrap it in foil so it didn't beep in the post truck!
