Here we go again - BA cabin crew strike [suspended]

Unfortunately I have some sympathy for the crew in question. Salaries of £15000 including allowances for flying are barely sustainable for living in London (and that's me making a huge assumption that they could get rent for £115 a week). It sounds like they were promised a lot more and the airline hasn't delivered.

I think that's similar to the salary of a first officer on many regional US carriers... some countries seem to love low salaries, it's an engine of growth! :)

I was having a chat the other day with a NZ based QF cabin crew paxing on a trans-Tasman flight and she was detailing to me some of the differences in work conditions between NZ-based and QF "legacy" cabin crew. She told me it can lead to some almost surreal discussions between staff when operating as mixed crew on A380 and 747.

Oops! I am on BA 32 HKG>LHR on Christmas evening and back on BA 31 on Jan 5!! Hope my flights will be ok!

Phew! Many thanks defurax!! My flights from LHR>MAD and vv will most probably be affected then!

Actually, I think they're getting exactly what they were promised. I understand they're unhappy that they get a lot less than legacy crew .... but they knew that when they signed on.

I don't think there's any dispute about the pay compared to legacy crew, but *if* we believe the union's claim, salaries were advertised at between £21000-£25000, but it turns out they're getting a base of £12,000 plus £3 an hour flying. Cabin crew are limited in their flying hours (1000 a year?) which would bring their salary to ~£15,000. That's a fair drop on what was supposedly advertised.

I did read it somewhere last night, can't find atm, but it affects only 1200 out of 15,000 BA Cabin Crew.

As mentioned, long haul won't be affected. It appears only short haul and domestic from LHR are potentially affected at the moment.

edit: strike is only for the 25th and into the early hours of the 26th December.

Does BA still offer free drinks and snacks between meals in F on such "short" flights? :p

LOL, hope they haven't butchered the bacon roll with brown sauce ... that would be one cut too many!

I don't generally support strikes, but if BA really pays its mixed fleet crew the rates that have been discussed here then I fully support the crew. That's very poor from BA and barely enough to even live on if you're based somewhere like London.

In all seriousness, SYD-SIN is short enough by BA's own definition to only get one meal in Y. Hopefully this doesn't affect F, but that's really poor for those in Y...

The strike has now been suspended.

BA crew Christmas strikes suspended - BBC News

Planned strikes by British Airways cabin crew on Christmas Day and Boxing Day have been suspended, the Unite union has said.
Up to 4,500 staff were due to walk out in a row over pay and conditions.
The union said workers employed on so-called "Mixed Fleet" contracts - who have joined since 2010 - were on lower pay than other staff.
Talks at conciliation service Acas have led to a revised offer which will be put to a ballot of union members.
The airline said it welcomed the move.

With the introduction of paid meals and drinks on shorthaul, I'd be striking on behalf of the passengers. Having to deal with CC payments as well as payment by Avios will surely make their work harder.

It's on again - 48 hours from Jan 10th.

BA cabin crew plan new strikes - BBC News

British Airways cabin crew will stage a 48-hour strike from 10 January after rejecting a new pay offer, the Unite union says.
Strikes planned for Christmas were suspended after the new offer was made but members rejected it by 7-1.
The strike affects "mixed fleet" staff who joined after 2010 and account for 15% of the total cabin crew.
