Have recently acquired silver status with Velocity and am a Lounge member. Flying from Melbourne to Brisbane next Friday with hand luggage only at noon and back to Melbourne the following day at 8am Brisbane time. Question is, do I:
a: check in online, choose my seat and print out my boarding pass
b: check in when I get to Tulla at the kiosks
c: let the Lounge check me in

The reason is, I have heard that if you check in at the Lounge and let them do it, you gave a better chance of being given a better seat. Im not particularly worried about the outbound trip, but I am playing in a fairly important cricket match only hours after getting off the retrun flight and would very much like a nice seat with legroom if possible.

I realise this is a dumb question, but any help or advice would be appreciated.

Not a stupid question at all. A few suggestions:
1. Buy Blue Zone and be guaranteed extra leg room
2. Start checking in via the net and if you can't get the seat selection you want, terminate the process (i.e. don't check in) and try your luck at the airport.
3. If you have bought a cheap ticket you are more likely to be pre-assigned towards the rear of the aircaft, so if you want staff at the Lounge to move you get there early before everyone else checks in to give staff the maximum opportunity to change your pre-allocated seat
4. Forward of the wings there is more leg room in seats A-C than D-F due to assymetry of the layout
5. Later this year with our new reservations system we will be able to implement better guest recognition, which includes integration with Velocity allowing for tiered guests to automatically be pre-allocated to better seats.
6. Cricket is never important ;).

thanks CrazyDave. One more question: how do I upgrade to a Blue Zone once I have already paid for my seat? There's no real facility to do so on the website. Do I call the guest centre?

Yes, call the guest contact centre. We are working on being able to offer Blue Zone over the net.

Virgin Blue Blue Zone

just looking at this page, there doesn't seem to be a clear statement that one must ring the GCC to upgrade to BlueZone.

cheers

Thanks again Dave. Called the Guest Centre and booked a Blue Zone seat for the return leg. Although, oddly I was only charged $25 instead of $35. Bris-Mel should have been a 'medium' haul flight which should have been charged at $35. Not complaining though.

You know the only reason cricket doesn't have riots the way soccer does?

..Because after the 3 to 5 days it takes to end in a draw the fans are all effectively tranquilized by tedium....

Not dead at all. As a cricket lover i argee wholeheartedly. it can be tedious in the extreme. But it is the test that looks like going that way for day 2, 3, 4 and the morning of day 5 only to be emphatically won in the last session that makes the tedium worthwhile. E.g. ashes test in adelaide a few years ago and the test this year. a few years between drinks definitely too tranquilized for a riot :D
