Help Mel-Lax in J

Hi everyone
I have a friend with Qantas points who wants to fly one way Mel to Lax in J in early April. He is flexible about dates and is prepared to fly via another City eg Syd, Nadi etc.

I looked at availability around this time but of course its school holidays so there are Very few Award seats available.

Are there other award seats available eg American which for any reason do not show up on the booking engine? If so how can one find and book these?

It's pretty hard to get tickets, particularly that time of the year. Your best bet is actually to book J reward seats when they are released.
In the past, I had also called QF just to double check that I've crossed all options and actually through the insight of the person I was speaking to, I secured 2 J reward seats.

Is he open to getting himself to an Asian port and then flying J from there?

If so, maybe check if there’s anything available from HKG or TYO with Cathay and JAL respectively.

I think HKG is a better bet - JAL awards are near impossible to find in April due to the cherry blossoms..

Either way, school holidays will make things very tough. Maybe MU?

He will probably go economy or premium economy if he can't get a J seat. I had hoped there was some kind of trick to finding J seats eg flying via NAN or AKL or perhaps that some partner Airlines didn't have their classic awards seats on the booking engine.

There was plenty of J to LAX released for April, back in June @ 300 days, all long gone now though

QF FF seats are only available via the QF website. Other airlines doing the intercontinental pacific route may have award seats but they would be on their website and in their own points currency.
Its too late to be trying for J awards for that route in early April

What FF status is friend?

only hope is to try for upgrade with points. In this case buy Premium Econ to have any chance.

Definitely something to look into. We just got back from HKG a week ago and whilst we were there we booked a few reward flights with CX only a day out in F and J to BKK and there was plenty of availability at the time to the US and Europe. Was actually surprised at the amount of J availability on EK only a day out
