Hi folks,

Just posted an introduction + question and realised question should be here. So much to learn....!

So, I have Qantas Gold and will need 240 extra SC by late Aug. Keen to get them as have OS trips coming up next year

I'm happy to make a few extra trips for my business and do it in Business Class.

Some threads seem to talk about BNE to Perth and Karratha but the Perth to Karratha would be hard (impossible!) for me to justify to the ATO!

Capital cities, larger towns would be OK, even NZ.

any advice at all would be much appreciated. :D

cheers,

Tolstoy

How much do you want to spend?

BNE-xSYD-AKL return in J can be had for $2650 in (say) July, and will earn 240 SCs for the return trip.

Alternatively, you could do two BNE/MEL returns in J for around the $1900 mark.

Sounds like you'd be better off going to Hawaii. We bought a sale fare for AUD379.00 plus $59.00 for the bundle to earn 40 SC plus points. Got an upgrade offer to J via email - AUD300.00 or AUD400.00 for 120 SC & points.

Btw all the status runs to/from KTA were when you could do JASA's which was award travel (points about the same as Classic) with a small cash outlay, definitely not anything close to paying the full whack.

Do you actually get the J SCs in that case, or is it treated like an upgrade at the airport?
Great deal if so!

Of course for the OP it would only work if they also got the upgrade offer - otherwise would have a nice holiday but still be 160 SCs short :)

Thanks v much Opusman. Sounds like good options. Either would work. Maybe combine a few days skiing in NZ...

cheers,

Thanks very much for the thoughts Oz but maybe you were lucky to get that great offer. Seems risky for me to count on that. Although Hawaii does sound quite appealing Mrs T would probably have me killed if I spend the money and fail in my mission for SCs !

Hello Again Opusman, just pondering your ideas now and wondering: could I buy an economy seat (for either of your suggestions) and then use points to upgrade to Business?
I mean, would I still get the full serve of 240SC or would it be reduced b/c I didn't pay real money for the business / J ?

If you book Y but use points to upgrade you will still only earn points and SC on the base fare. So sadly no.

Cheers Captain Halliday. That clears that up. I have 500000 points so will book a J (to somewhere) and use points + pay. Have read other threads where that seems endorsed as a sound strategy!

Thanks again.

YW. I'm no expert in the points plus pay thing, but from what others have posted it is rarely the best value. Given the overseas travel plans you mention in another thread, maybe paying outright for the 240SC needed for platinum and then booking some of the overseas trips in business and using points to travel first... Or book premium and upgrade to business?

Others with more experience may wish to weigh in...

Yes also look to other airlines. MH has some great value fares at present
