I thought it might be worth starting a new thread so we can share ideas how we attempt to maintain and hopefully even grow our personal relationships outside work.
I have never travelled for work so I can only imagine the potential strain on relationships caused to those constantly away from home. It is a shame that our DNA seems to be wired to assume the worst in people.

Maintaining healthy relationships with your partner is increasingly difficult at any stage of life. For many it seems that life isn’t getting any easier without the kids with statistics revealing the rate of post 50 separations on the increase. My wife and I are in our early 50’s having been married for over 30 years. We have two adult daughters who as common for Sydney are still at home more often than not doing their own thing.

Our marriage has had it’s fair share of ups and downs though thus far, this year has been far more smooth sailing than normal. I feel this has been due to our decision to take it in turn each weekend to decide and organise an activity to be undertaken together. The only conditions are the activity must be for at least two hours, not involve the same activity / location twice that year, no complaining with all decisions being made by the partner having the choice. The girls are of course welcome to come if they somehow have free time available.

We have been going now for five months only missing four weekends when we have been away. We are pleasantly exploring parts of Sydney and surrounds we would never have got around to doing. Last weekend involved a Rivercat for the first time, Paddy’s Markets, Darling Harbour Chinese Gardens and lunch. We also discovered the Opal Card on Sunday’s enables you to travel all day on ferries, trains and buses for only $2.50.

I suppose doing more things together could also hasten the end of a relationship though that could also be a good thing rather than postponing the inevitable.

The topic probably been done in some fashion before so apologies for any duplication.

What a great idea. It is easy to be complacent about relationships and not put in any work. I think it is important also to do new things to keep you growing as a person. Thanks for the reminder.
