Haze alert for those with impending travel to SE Asia

Those fires happen every year. So much for climate change/global warming etc etc. Not much chance when it isnt a world wide response.
How will it be by late July?

Yes, this year is apparently worse, with particulate readings highest on record - significantly higher than previous highs in 1997.

Sounds dreadful and not good for those with respiratory problems. Hope it clears for you soon or you get some rain.

If you must go to SIN, bring plenty of n95 masks and eye drops. The whole country is out of stock on those, so if you happen to be lucky enough not to use them all, I suppose you can flog them off for good money. It currently smells of burnt wood/grass no matter where you are - even inside shopping malls. Note that the widely used PSI in SIN is based on PM10. PM2.5 readings are even more scary.

Is this Indonesia or Malaysia burning off forests? What is the cause of the haze?

Yeah should have read the article properly. Very sad...

The papers is owned by the SIN government. While the situation is bad, I would still take the article with a grain of salt.

You'll also find that the pollution levels in the early mornings are somewhat similar to what you would get in a bushfire in AU, and then builds up as the day goes by, which I would take a guess and say that it's SIN's own pollution. Of course, nobody ever mentions that on this little island.

Singapore Airlines are waiving change fees for people travelling during period 21-27 June

Singapore Airlines is closely monitoring the haze situation in Singapore and is working with the relevant regulatory authorities. Currently, Singapore Airlines' flights into and out of Changi Airport are continuing to operate as scheduled. However, contingency plans are in place should the situation worsen and affect flight operations.
We appreciate that some customers may wish to defer their travel at this time. Singapore Airlines will waive administrative fees/penalties for refunds, re-booking and re-routing, for customers holding confirmed tickets issued on or before 21 June for travel over 21-27 June 2013. The above also applies to redemption tickets.
Travelling to Singapore

Local authorities are providing regular updates about the haze situation in Singapore and PSI (Pollutant Standards Index) levels. The National Environment Agency has issued precautionary guidelines on the haze situation; more information can be found at the NEA website: Health Advisory for Haze.

Well, for once QF marketing seem to be on the ball in SEA; just received this by email:

"Discover the cleanest air in the world in Tasmania...

Breathe easy and fly Qantas to Tasmania for S$1,018 return economy....

There’s plenty more to discover in Australia and New Zealand, and with these great fares on Qantas, you’d be in a haze not to get booking."

I will be transitting SIN early July but no need to leave the airport.

I was there earlier in the week and I have never seen it that bad, both in SIN AND KUL

Update for today: The 3-hour PSI reached 401 around lunch time. In plain English, it's potentially lethal for the ill and elderly if they were outside during this time. A lot of residential and commercial buildings are now also smelling smoke inside as well, so about the only way to avoid it now would be getting out of the country. I would also imagine the airport to be a little bit hazy as well. Visibility was well below 1km for most of the morning.

N95 masks and air purifiers continue to be out of stock in the vast majority of places. Any places offering sales of such products are completely swamped. A groupon-like site finished an allocation of N95 masks in hours. Retail freight forwarders are also offering free upgrade to express shipping for this type of products being shipped from the US.

On the bright side, there are less than half the hotspots in Sumatra from the peaks earlier this week, and over the past 5 hours, the PSI has returned to levels that are much more acceptable and generally non-life-threatening for the vast majority of the population.

PSI readings available here: PSI and PM2.5 Readings
For those hanging out in SIN, the 3-hour gives the most up-to-date data regarding the haze conditions.
For those who aren't in the country, but want to keep an eye on the situation, scroll down to the 24-hour readings, which would be more useful as a summary.

Mrs and Jnr are supposed to be transiting Singapore on Monday (24th June) in late evening on Emirates. Is anyone aware of any flight advisory from Emirates like the Singapore Airlines ones. I've tried looking at the Emirates website, but can't find anything there. I wouldn't mind getting them re-routed to the direct DXB - MEL flight instead of the current DXB-CMB-SIN-MEL flight. Its an award booking, so any re-routing by airline due to operational reasons would save us $$$.

I doubt they would do that for you if you are simply transiting the airport for a short time. The airline might consider it if your DESTINATION was singapore by offering to change dates free... but otherwise flights are operating as normal.

Same ... Sort of. Staying in SIN for a couple of days on the way through but don't need to leave the airport on the way back. I guess I will have to put up with it

Hmm heading over on July 5 for just over a week. Hope its not as bad by then :\

Don't think Qantas have advised of anything, DFAT just says to follow the Singaporean government guidelines.
