Just looking at some award flights to Queenstown return from Brisbane. For a family of 4 the taxes are $1000. I expect that from Qantas but normally my award bookings with Velocity the taxes would be around the $200 mark. Have I missed something?

Doing a dummy booking for direct flights, I see this:

177569

$2.08 of that is CC fee.

Using ITA I see the following for the same route and date:

177568

Which adds up to about $6 less.

On trans-Tasman routes, Velocity has a carrier charge of $3.50 one-way in economy or $5.50 for business class since the start of this year.

I think the thing is its been a while since Ive gone to book Velocity award seats for the family (4 of us) I have been chewing through velocity points on Hawaiin and Hong Kong Airlines. Plus transferring points across to Kris flyer and have been lulled into an expectation of the fees to be typically ALOT less. Im sure Ive never had to pay more then a few hundred on Kris flyer and usually around $200 on the others. The $832 total for Velocity to Queenstown gave me a bit of a shock. I see no there has been no jump. Just a lowering of my fee expectations.
