Hi all,

just sitting in my quiet home office, listening to the bizarre combo of rainbow lorikeets displaced by fireworks in the night, and drunken youths bad mouthing in the streets. A competition to be more raucous.

This is truly the current Australia :)

Happy New Year everyone :)

Juddles.

I work on the human calendar. At the end of my first year on earth I was 1.At the end of my first decade on earth I was 10.The year I was 10 was therefore my 11th year.hence a new decade.
I can't help it if everyone else is wrong. o_O ;):D:eek:

You do a great impression of a numerically challenged millennial, drron ;) :p Next you'll be drawing on mindless pop songs for justification.

It seems that the calendar used by most of the world is too hard for people to understand

Its all the Romans fault - no number 'zero'.

Indeed I am also being inclusive not offending anyone as the Chinese, muslims, hindus, orthodox christians etc do not share our calendar. :D ;)
Though in the future when people talk of the 21st century twenties 2020 will be included in that era.

And i was going to post the 1969 hit In the Year 2525 but Youtube has blocked it for Australia.

And i hope others are having the same happy and contented New Year as I am ... not forgetting the people exposed to bush fires, of course. :(

BTW, fellow pedants :)

The first year AD (as defined, retrospectively IIRC, and I'm not going to get into Roman/Julian and Gregorian calendars! ) ended on 31 December 0001. Ten years later, the first decade ended on 31 December 0010. Keep going forward in blocks of 10 and the current decade will end on 31 December 2020 (again, happily ignoring the conversion from Roman/Julian to Gregorian calendars ) . We had this debate at the end of the last 'millennium' - the first thousand years ended on 31 December 2000, not 31 December 1999 but there was too much of a party to be had for anyone to really care.

But sure, most people prefer to recognise the end of a decade as 31 December on a '9' year. Decades (brackets of 10 years) of course can end on a '3' year, or any year. We can all have a bit of fun picking the nits. Imagine if @juddles called the thread 'Happy New Decade!!' #

# Would have meant no raspberries for him!
