I'd like to see what jb747 has to say about this one:
What happens when the pilot goes to the toilet?
Ever wondered why the seatbelt sign randomly lights up during a flight? Well forget turbulence, it may be that the pilot has made a sneaky trip to the toilet. A cabin crew member will guard the flight deck door while the pilot makes the trip to the lavatory.

Personally I'm calling BS on this one.

Sounds like its an airline specific thing, probably a US carrier?

I did notice the fa on virgin stand in the way of the door on my flight to Brisbane this week first time I have seen it on an Aus flight always on uS flights

FA in the doorway I can believe. Switching on the fasten seat belt sign for the purpose I do not.

And if the typical US flight is to be believed, that fasten seat belt sign is, more often than not, on for at least 80-90% of the flight anyway (excluding take-off and landing where it is compulsorily on).

Ditto. Three flights last week and it happened every time. DJ have a male FA with arms like tree trunks - he stood there like the terminator with his arms crossed.

But did they turn on the seat belt sign. That's the point that is being questioned, not whether a cabin crew member stands in the doorway.

UA have a fold out barrier that blocks the entry to the forward galley ... AA wedge a trolley at an angle between the bulkheads and US have an FA simply stand guard.

I have not noticed any correlation between the seat belt sign and one of the flight crew going to the lavatory.

I had an "awkward" moment on a MEL-PER flight with DJ. I was en route to the toilet and as I went through the curtains into the galley I saw a member of the flight crew about to re enter the coughpit. A male FA quickly stepped in front of me blocking my path to the toilet until the member of the flight crew was back in the coughpit with the door closed. Nothing was said, but probably because I smiled and took a backward step.

I have seen FA's on 737's stand in the aisle to block the path of pax when the coughpit door is about to be opened.

Can't say I have noticed any correlation between crew toiled use and the seat belt sign though.

I have seen this in the USA, followed by the beverage cart being wheeled out in front of the cabin with an FA blocking it too, whilst the pilot/first officer goes about their business.

The seat belt sign sounds sensible, as surely the flight would be bumpier if there is no pilot to steer the plane?

Perhaps the light remained on after turbulence and the Pilot had to answer the call of nature. That's probably the extent.

I was on DJ 737 Syd-Per in J and came out only to see the Pilot standing in the gally. Bit of a shock!

You mean there's not an autopilot?

When travelling HKG-YVR on CX in first I went to the loo at one stage and the FO was waiting to use it as well. He offered to let me go before him. I declined and with a smile said that it was more important that he go back to his seat than me to mine. He laughed and went in.

Nobody else was there.

When travelling AA first I saw the aforementioned food carts blocking the aisle and people being required to remain in their seats.
