Gifted Platinum membership

Hi All

If I was gifted Platinum from a Platinum One member would I be able to get the family (4 of us) into a Qantas lounge in September? Flying through Syd to the US. I'm currently only bronze so would the top level help with upgrades as I don't have a lot of SC.

I assume you mean if you were gifted a First Class lounge pass from a P1 member? If so I highly doubt you'll get a party of four into the lounge.

Gifted Platinum One? Do you mean gifted Platinum?

Generally you can take a guest with you and if you have young kids you'll be ok.

Note kids are counted as guests in some partner lounges.

It sounds most likely from the description that this would be a case of being gifted WP by a P1.

This certainly would help with your upgrade priority, yes.

In that case yourself, a guest over 18 and children under 18 will be allowed in

There are other things that Status helps with like free seat selection for you and all passengers on the same booking even on the cheapest QF economy tickets - though those are not upgradeable for international flights, be sure to book upgradeable fares if you want to upgrade. Also just for you (not others on your booking) you get extra checked baggage. Then there’s the status bonus (extra points from flying on revenue tickets, again just for you). Note the minimum points guarantee means that the status bonus won’t help for short economy flights (SYD-MEL), but it will to LAX.

If you fly domestic QF flights whilst WP you can take in a more generous two guests who don’t need to be travelling to the Business Lounge + kids travelling with you that are under 18.

Note that if your friend fails to retain P1 and/or doesn’t gift you WP for the next membership year you’d drop back to NB (Bronze).

If your friend does gift you WP, be sure to thank them in some way that seems appropriate.

Note also that at busy times getting upgrades for 4 passengers may be very difficult even with status. It’s a bit of a lottery. Sometimes you win and sometimes you don’t.

Also note in terms of upgrades if the other passengers are not in the same booking then you would not have any influence over their chances of upgrades (unlikely, but it could be a situation).

I'd also note from peresonal experience that my giftee of WP status, which I gifted in December or January gave them till Aug 2020 (ie: my membership year end PLUS a year) which was a rather delightful surprise for us both. That would hold even if in my next membership year(assuming I retain P1) I gift WP to someone else.

How many people can I nominate for Platinum membership? You can only have one person linked to your Platinum One membership at any one time and you can only nominate one person per Membership Year.

I see the point.. however it's then unclear. My new year starts Sept 01... If I then say I want Happy Trails to be my Platinum giftee, then do they revoke the WP already gifted(with an expiry date Aug 31, 2020) or do they just say nope, you have your platinum gift allocated till 2020.. Either way doesn't seem entirely fair to me.

So I guess has any P1 changed a (previously Partner) Platinum giftee in a new year and noted what has happened?

(I admit I assumed that since the Platinum giftee was valid till Aug 2020 it would not be affected by any change I make after the current membership ear).
