General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

ACT had two cases which were of unknown origin (i.e. possibly community transmission). Both have now been determined as not being covid-19 at all. We have no community transmission - all overseas, cruise ships or close contacts. Good news I guess.

Anyone facing a investment property/non payment of rent already?

The Prime Minister said theres a 6mth stop on evictions and talk to your tenants so WTF are we suppose to do?

Us: Need you to pay the rent
Them: Cant

So they just dont pay rent for 6mths because they read the byline somewhere that they cant be evicted?

I ventured out for the first time today since i arrived back in Oz 16 days ago - drove to Hobart to get flu shot and to have blood test for minor matter. I
went to Woolies to do a first decent shop, dreading empty shelves and long lines. Nothing like that; very light load of people in there, no check-out queues. A number of people paying scant regard to social distancing - ie different people gathered in front of some shelves, contemplating what to get, like they would normally do. I was surprised that no-one was wearing masks (I know about their dubious effectiveness, but i thought many would still be wearing). In fact I saw no masks at all on my trip, except nurses at doctor's surgery and pathology place.

A few bare shelves at Woolies - t-paper was one, some gaps in rice & pasta, but you could buy a selection of both still, if you wanted. (EDIT: also no chicken! Pretty funny, as there is an Ingham's facility about a km away :) Plenty of all other meats ) I got every thing I wanted.

Stopped at my local IGA to get some things I had forgotten. First time back there too. Place was deserted (although it was pouring rain all day today). Again, no gaps on shelves except t-paper and some cleaning products,BUT, as I was there, the manager appeared with his stocking trolley and started unloading t-paper :) . I asked if he had any small packs - no, only the 18-ers. So I got one, and hid my face as I exited the store with it under my arm :(

By the way. The IGA store manager told me that Toll logistics drivers were on strike for 5 weeks at the time the panic buying broke out (I think un-related) and that was a major cause of the supply-chain problems after the panic buying.

I was away then - anyone know what happened?

Theyre only covered if they legitimately cannot pay, not if they just dont want to.

How do you being to prove that? This is migrant 86yr mum in laws property, which is her pension because she doesnt get one from the Govt. I just found out theyre already 4 weeks in arrears. Going to have to get hubby to use his POA and talk to the management company.

Finally got hand sanitiser today, currently being produced for Wheel & Barrow by the great South Aussie company Bickfords (yes, the cordial and mixer guys!!) It's not gel, but rather liquid, so I had a bit of a think about the best way to use it and had a eureka moment!

All those goodies from J & F that have been collecting dust for a while have finally paid off. I *never* use the facial mist touted amongst the good stuff, so emptied out the contents, washed out the bottle and voila! Using a small funnel my mum uses to fill her perfume bottle, I found that they hold about 7-8ml of sanitiser, which will last about 70-80 sprays. (Yeah, I tested with water before refilling.;))

Gave the Jurlique version to my mum, with my dad and I having an Aspar version each.

Toll were also cyber attacked and their booking system was down for a few weeks at the same time as the strike. (I don't know what the strike was for)

Ive had deliveries of online shopping from Tol twice in the last wee - so I dont think they are on strike.

I always though the big delievries to supermarkets more likely to use LInFox or BorderExpress or JimPearson/Fleetmaser - at least when I had the latter two as clients years ago heaps of the trucks were supermarket or coco-cola branded.

I'm still waiting on my order I made last Wednesday night.

Toll sites was taken down about 2mths ago (now back up) because of hacking but for the last few weeks, theyre flat out doing store deliveries.

One of our factories went from 4 trucks per day of a particular product for a particular client to 12 trucks per day and would like more.

Boss received an email from ACT health saying they will give her 12 months registration, hers lapsed last year, if she will put her self down to work in ICU.

Problematical at the moment, but I know what sort of person she is and I'm sure she would like to help in some way. Maybe when she is back in "das boot" and can walk she can do something. All her ICU nursing friends that moved into other areas are being recalled! Some haven't used a ventilator for years. Interesting times, to say the least.

This rent thing is only relevant if the Tenant(s)' situation worsened due to COVID-19.

Those on job search or on a pension's situation would have improved somewhat.

They are building a “temporary” 50 bed emergency dept for Covid-19 patients, so I think they are going to need everyone they can get

The Assistant Treasurer on Afternoon briefing yesterday said “ You’re not entitled to stop paying just because, many Australians still are working - (some 40% plus anyone on centrelink and superannuation.)

He referred to this announcement from Tas Govt
Changes to residential tenancies

However, I want to stress that this is not an opportunity to avoid paying rent.

We strongly advise tenants to keep paying their rent if they are able to do so.

If tenants cannot pay their rent, they should, in the first instance, talk to their landlord to see if rent is able to be reduced.
