General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

See my comment above. the point I am attempting to make is Australians buying firearms are not criminals, the gun laws are stringent in Australia since Port Arthur.

criminals don’t purchase firearms through the channels that have been closed.

Not true, not everyone lives in cities
I guess the point is, after the drought and bushfires I'd have expected that Farmers would have already sourced their permits and firearms. If it was just ammunition being purchased that would be fine. But this is more than that.

Like the run on toilet paper and other stuff, probably no malicious intent. Maybe more are hoping to live off the land?

In our area of WA gun shops have closed. I know a few farmers who must have had a hint it was going to happen so while they don't need new guns, they did pick up some ammo just in case. As has been said it might be needed for dealing with sick animals and doubtless one for the freezer.

I can see the point of stopping gun sales though. Who knows how people are going to react. I also thought the other day there is likely to be an increase of rustlers working the area.

Not possible if you live in the city, and I assume that on the applications that the address would have given the authorities a good indication of where the people live.

We are not the US. please remember people in Australia who legally purchase hunting or sport firearms (as opposed to military weapons / assault rifles) are not criminals and I am unsure why this is classed as an excellent decision.
Well, my opinion is that it’s a good decision. The 2200 applications (even if a lot are to buy before price rises due to drop in A$) suggests there’s an element of panic buying. There’s too many guns in our society and I believe they should be restricted more. Sure if you live in the country but can’t see why city dwellers need to own handguns or any guns at all. But YMMV.

And of course the ban is only for hunting and sport, not primary production or commercial uses. So the farmers can still get what they need.

I don't want to make a big thing of this, but ... as you say, that's an assumption. Maybe it wasn't. Anyway, the Vic govt has made their decision, and in these times, I respect that. Like steady, I just don't like the seeming automatic connection between legal gun sales etc and criminality.

Yes not everyone lives in the city & those that need it like primary producers & pest controllers in WA can still get access to the equipment they need. You must have missed that bit in the post you sniped

I am sensitive to this issue, so I will refrain from further posts. as I understand others are also - just from a different perspectives.

yes, maybe some are applying for the wrong reason, my experience of people not linked to the land is that they have a very strong bias against firearms and owners of firearms and only consider their circumstance or group legal firearm owners with gun crime as that is the way the media often portrays it. Many of the fire effected land owners could have realised they needed a firearm they didn’t have and now they have time to reflect are doing something about it. Maybe due to fires there is more wildlife than feed. Maybe a thousand different reasons, none of which are relevant to people not on the land.

Do people in the cities really want to support local growers and farmers? Not after an answer

All I wish to do is point out people who purchase firearms through legal channels are not criminals, and are not doing anything wrong by purchasing a firearm even if it’s not something most AFF members would do. Stopping them may seem excellent to you but maybe only because of lots of miss information/ bias information.

Bringing hand guns Into the equation really shows how little is known - I guess many are listening to Fox News for their Facts

anyhow, I am not Going to change anyone’s mind, I fully understand many feel the way they do and I do not want to argue - so I will leave this subject here

Unfortunately your post totally ignores what is proposed by the government and the statement by the commissioner. It appears you merely read the headline and jumped to conclusions. The government is not intending to put any restrictions on landowners/farmers.

If you read the whole article you would see the following....

The new laws will restrict the sale of ammunition and guns for recreational and sport shooters. Those with a clear "occupational" need for firearms, such as security guards and primary producers, can still apply for permits and purchase guns and ammunition.

I agree with you in principle wrt country people etc, but the criminal element is not exactly the point. One has to consider domestic violence issues in cities. There should not be guns potentially available.

But, let’s leave it there. Many have different opinions.

I think steady was only replying to and reacting to what’s been posted here and the general issue. Agree or not, but fair go.

We in Tasmania don’t need to be lectured to by anyone about the evils of guns in the wrong hands. But most of the people I know can have a mature discussion without automatically ... oh never mind. 😕

Last word ??
Guns are endemic in the city, any all the boys who want them have them.
I have seen collections that would frighten the life out of the shrinking violets.
Do I think it is right ? Of course not , but it is what it is...
The laws do limit casual, opportunistic ownership and possible use ; to that end alone they are justified.

Again all of my posts on this have agreed with what Steady said on the criminality link not being a valid one and so I am not sure why your post has been directed at myself? Maybe I have missed something?
