General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

My uni is doing free flu vax again. My appointment isn't for 3 weeks though! Working from home as of today, but childcare is still open so the kids have gone.

The 3 weeks is not a problem, and arguably is a good thing. Indeed having the flu shot too early can mean not being optimally protected for the period of time that you need it most.

Annual immunisation is recommended in autumn (March – May) each year, prior to the peak of the flu season which usually occurs between June and September.

Protection from the vaccine is expected to develop two to three weeks after immunisation but optimal protection occurs within the first three to four months after immunisation. You should not delay immunisation until closer to winter, as the flu can occur at any time, and the peak of the flu season may come earlier than expected. Getting immunised sooner minimises the risk of catching the flu before the season ‘peaks’.

I originally scheduled my appointment for today back in early Feb as I was meant to be overseas next week and wanted protection while overseas.

Well today started as "poor me woe is me " I sent an email to a lovely AFF person who managed to cope with all my woe begone tales today. After sending it I realised that I needed to do something so instead of a very cruddy day husband and I have spent the last couple of hours doing some deep housework and now have no guilt as being idle
Obviously this isn't for everyone but at this point in time it worked for me
There are a few more weeks I can't won't don't want to be upset the whole time

i was supposed to get free flu vax at work next Monday (6th April) but as all our offices are now closed, apointments were cancelled and we were sent vouchers for Chemist Warehouse
This was unexpected. Woolworths is giving out free flu shot vouchers to all staff for Terry White. They haven't done that before. It appears that the DCs and support offices have regular on site flu vax programs, but the stores haven't gotten anything like it.

Of course, looking at where the Terry White outlets are, it would be somewhat hard to get to one. @_@

I recall reading somewhere Sir Tim (Clark) of EK was stepping down on Jun 30th.

What a time for a transition.

Will be a nice little mess for his successor to sort out, hope he gives a good exit briefing.

The nearest Terry White with flu shots is currently showing as wide open for the entire month of April, but would require 2 buses or ~70 mins walk each way.
The comm about the free shots says they are trying to get access to other chemists, so I might sit on it for a week or so to see if they get Capital or Priceline as the nearest stores of those brands are more accessible.
There is also an Amcal nearby that is more accessible then the Terry White, but it doesn't appear to do vaccinations.

hey haven't done that before

Wow that surprises me, most large corporates have had flu vacinnation programs for at least the last 10 years. Then again my experience with having WOW as a client years ago is that as a comapny they treat their their staff poorly.

The only thing possibly not covered is a month of the worst air pollution in the world. Apparently the death toll in Canberra it’s up to around 40.

I wonder whether the terrible poisonous air in many places in China contributed to the death toll there with this virus; not to mention the smoking rate amongst men etc.

In Rundle mall, woolies is like across the mall down the escalator to Terry Whites....30 metres

Received a call from our dentist this afternoon.. closing down.. all too hard.
Small Suburban practice, old fashioned dentistry rather than the new age hype, our dentist went through school with one of our sons.
What a bummer…. alternate dentist (toowoomba) also closed until May.

What to do now.. this is stuff you don't think of….

Excellent decision. We are not the US.
We are not the US. please remember people in Australia who legally purchase hunting or sport firearms (as opposed to military weapons / assault rifles) are not criminals and I am unsure why this is classed as an excellent decision.

Because hunting and sport firearms is no longer an approved activity right now I believe. So no need for any purchases right now.

No sure I agree, there are many people who don’t live in cities, they own property, they are allowed to hunt on it, they are allowEd to humanly euthanase sick stock.

True

and I am unsure why this is classed as an excellent decision.

There were more than 2200 applications for firearms in Victorian last week, Mr Patton said, double the previous week.

But, why the rise? What was really driving the rise in applications?

Hunting is no longer possible as camping and holidays are basically banned, and one cannot make unnecessary trips such as to go hunting.

I doubt many people have a shooting range within walking distance. So sport shooting is out too.

So why all the new applications? And why grant them them now when the applicants probably in the main could not use guns now anyway (or at least not for sport or hunting)?

The only people that would need ammunition or firearms at the moment should be those that need it for their work, mainly farmers which I believe there is or will be an exemption for in WA. With all the restrictions on sporting clubs & general movement no one else can really use a firearm for the time being.

True

See my comment above. the point I am attempting to make is Australians buying firearms are not criminals, the gun laws are stringent in Australia since Port Arthur.

criminals don’t purchase firearms through the channels that have been closed.

Not true, not everyone lives in cities

Yes I agreed with you.

However what I suspect is the real driver being the rise in applications is that some people may have been seeking to buy guns for self -protection etc and to my mind at least more guns circulating in tense times is not a good idea. Moreso if they are not really skilled in using guns. I also suspect that the government suspects the same thing.
