I have a friend who wants me to get some new, expensive garden shears to him in Thailand. I would check them in in checked baggage in Sydney. Whilst not classed as a dangerous goods, i am concerned that i may have to spend significant time and hassle explaining them with customs in both Singapore (stopover) or Thailand. Carriers are SQ and Tiger Singapore.

Anyone have any experiences/advice? I am thinking it is all too hard but want to explore the options before i say no to him.

If they are still in their packaging, (stiff plastic I guess), then less risk of being a problem.

I'd say you will be fine. I frequently travel with a geological pick in my checked luggage into the US and Canada and never a problem. (Often that's the only reason I have to check a bag  )

Reminds me of the time i was in Singapore about 5 years ago killing some time before my late night flight back to OZ going through Sim Lim Sq area where there were numerous demonstrations of gadgets, kitchen utensils etc. On my way to MRT to the airport I passed a demo showing a meat cleaver chopping through all sorts of timbers etc etc and still sharp enough to slice and dice the ripes of tomatoes , I was so impressed I bought one, $10, bloody bargain, stuck it in my small backpack and on to the MRT to the Airport, picked up my luggage in the storage area Checked in at the counter got my air ticket proceeded through security x-ray with my hand luggage, grabbed it of the conveyor and started to walk there was a cry out Sir sir, by security can, you please open your bag, sure I said he reach in and pulled out the cleaver, and asked, what you going to use this for, and I thought, what a stupid question !!! for chopping vegetables of course. then it dawned on me, I forgot can't have that in one's hand luggage, LOL had to go back a luckily my check-in bag was still on the belt. Mmmmm what was I thinking lol
