Hey,

Simple question. Does anyone know or know how to figure out if you get more points fueling up at Shell or BP?

Simples

:)

Edit..... or even Caltex Woolworths?

Velocity @ BP is 2 Velocity points per liter, regardless of the price of fuel.

Flybuys at Coles Express is 1 Flybuys point per $2 spent. Or, 0.435 Velocity points per $2 spent.

So unless fuel is >$4 a liter BP earns a lot more Velocity points. Even with Flybuys transfer bonuses, it isn't really close. Hopefully I did my math correct!

Still, the total points earned are pretty small so I just pick whoever has the better petrol prices for the most part.

But sometimes the docket from Coles will say 8 Flybuys points per litre at Shell, which would put it ahead.

And keep an eye on your emails, Velocity have regular promos for fueling up at BP hence I never fill up anymore unless travelling.

Indeed but you get a choice of 0.04 off a liter or 8 flybuys points per liter, so you are effectively buying those points.

8 flybuys points per liter is 3.5 Velocity points per liter, but you are losing out on a 4 cent cash discount for the privilege of that additional 1.5 Velocity points over what BP offers.

Depends on your valuation, but I'd say that is more than market value for a Velocity point. BP still wins, at least for me.

There are typically bonus offers on either side that can sway things for sure. For example, there is a fairly regular bonus to convert Flybuys to Velocity, and BP bonus offers are also common.

Faulty logic: you're still losing your 4 cent per litre discount by filling up at BP.
The question is whether 8 Flybuys points are worth 4 cents. Some might say not but for me the answer is yes.
And almost 4 Velocity points per litre is better than 2, no matter what your valuation of points.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I see what you mean but it just depends on price of fuel then at the particular station.

I like to earn points but I have too many to justify paying extra for them at questionable value. I'll always take the cash discount instead.

I go with whichever is cheaper, although I may make some allowance if there is a decent special offer. The standard offer at any of them doesn't really sway me that much.

FB regularly offernig me 10c off per litre. that wins

Not really. Starting from the base position that fuel is the same cost per litre at both BP and Coles. Then going with 8 FB points per litre means your paying (the lost discount) 4 cents to get an extra 1.5 vielocity points = 2.7 cents per point

Apparently I can buy a $1 item and still get 250 VA points. Them, go off to Costco of WOW for cheaper petrol. :)

Wonder if VA will negotiate a deal with another petrol retailer when BP finally ends.

Usually fill up BP cos it's generally cheaper per litre in my area, plus there tends to be more AMEX BP deals (one running at the moment).

That sucks I checked and nothing for me... I never seem to get these anymore!

The most recent Amex BP offer was "Ozbargained" - went up on the Ozbargain site in the early hours of the morning and was fully subscribed within about 6 hours. By the time I saw the posts on OzB and AFF about it (about 8am) it was game over - the offer wasn't visible on either of my cards (and a number of people have said they didn't receive it either) so I assume by that stage Amex may have pulled it from "Available Offers" so it didn't show up because it was no longer available anyway?

I suspect that any offer that can easily be used for gift vouchers is going to go quick....

I saw this and thought of this thread.

Australia's most expensive petrol retailer revealed

This backs up my findings, particularly on premium fuels. I run 98 in my car and for that fuel (which isn't usually advertised on the sign) I have seen Coles as much as 19 cents per liter more expensive than my local BP!

I feel that Coles Express offers these big discounts to drive traffic but just compensates with their base pricing.

I just go to my local Caltex and use a 5% off gift card plus a 4 cents off Woolworths Rewards and a Myer One card.
To get the mailed plastic gift cards from RACWA I pay with a 3 points per dollar Amex Platinum Edge CC.
All up it works out at about 24 cents of retail value and I go on the cheap Monday cycle.

I don't really use enough fuel to worry about it too much but BP Vs shell (coles) for me shell is the winner.

Shell gift voucher from coles with platinum edge & local champion ~ 4.6 VFF points per dollar @ 15% bonus + 8 flybuys / 4 velocity per litre.

So for me, $120 fill works out to 872 VFF all said and done with transfer offers. For me about $17 in points value (just under 2c a point or 14% of my cash spend back in points value). BP is also much more expensive in my area than shell so win-win.

That's the problem. Where I am, Shell is consistently 4-12c/L more than the independent servo. Today I bought Diesel at 1.35/L. Same suburb, BP is $1.45 and Shell $1.49.
Your 4c voucher often just brings the Shell price down to even with other servos. And 10c/L difference is a lot to pay for a few points.
