Just got an email from QF advising that they have now launched their free WiFi service.

This service is available in MEL T1, SYD T3, BNE and PER.

From what i've heard you may have to watch a short ad before it connects up.

Nice addition. Seems that their "Q-Kiosks" (or whatever it was called) didn't bring in the income they thought it would.

And of course, it's a value-add when you fly Qantas, and also stops the "leeches" hanging around near the Qantas Club entry.

Overall a good move.

Good move, provides a nice bit of extra value when choosing airlines for those without QP access (like myself). Removes the need for bluetooth/wi-fi tethering which is good, as the networks around the airport can often be congested.

Good idea for Qantas pax, but what really annoys me is when airports do it. In GLT the wifi, even is the lounge, is provided by the airport. I was logged out of the service every 15 minutes, it was a PITA.

If its going to be provided, it's got to be convenient, otherwise it turns people off.



Agreed. Well rather, it has to work.

I hope that QF maintains the relatively quick wifi in its lounges.

I don't mind if they force you to view an ad and then limit the connection to say 1 hour (after which you must log in again). It's free wifi; 1 hour uninterrupted service is not too bad. This is a privilege, not a human right (but that said something's gotta make up for the differential in cost against the other carriers).

That all said and done, I've got two bits that the boffins didn't conduct a proper stress load test on the system before launching. They probably naively assumed only so many passengers, not all of them will use the system and actually send bandwidth through it to test it. Especially in BNE where it's too easy for the JQ, TT and VA crowd (who can't get into a lounge) to just amble over to the QF section, leech some free wifi, then go away.

I suppose props have to go to Qantas for at least getting up this initiative. I suppose it will be up to us to report on the reliability of the service.

Okay, but I'll be in the lounge testing that wifi while you're in the terminal ;)

Argh get out of the lounge once in a while! It'll do you a bit of good to mix with the..... ummm.... never mind.... :D :p

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

BNE already has free airport provided wifi both in departure areas of both international and domestic terminals. It was introduced a few months ago. It is good that QF are also providing it. But I can't see a big rush of JQ, TT and VA customers to walk over to the QF section just to use QF wifi.

That is not to say there might be other airports where it could be an issue.

WiFi on the planes should be the next logical step.

AA has it for their flights, so might be a nice addition particularly for flights across the continent.

We have a lot more empty space in the middle of the continent than they do in the US...
