Free papers on VARA flights

Sitting on VA1191 and everyone on the plane has got a copy of the Australian.
Is this normal practice for VARA flights ?

Yep, normal offering for VARA - hangover from the Skywest days. I quite like it actually.

I did DPS-PHE on VARA a while back, and they even had a stack of Jakarta Post's which was a nice change

The Australian (and to a lesser extent other papers) is notorious for giving papers away like this, at events and at universities to artificially inflate their 'circulation' and as such their influence. I would be surprised if VA even pays for these copies - could even be a trial run to extend like on QF, with the big piles of them out the front of every gate. For some reason people equate newspaper to 'full service', so could be part of the transition.

Sitting in the lounge now waiting for the weekly Melbourne to Kalgoorlie flight on a VA Regional F100. Paper on the inbound on Friday, from memory though not ex Melb.
Just hoping there's no head wind tonight or we'll be diverting to Adelaide to refuel (again)
