Thats a bit too remote for me.

Im underwhelmed by the look of the Peppers Cradle Mountain rooms. Unless you get the King Billy suite but the rest is a bit blah for the $.

Actually dont hate the Wilderness Village spa cottage. Accommodation - Cradle Mountain Wilderness Village Close to Dove Lake ect for hubby to take photos, maybe a photography guide for night and restaurants nearby

We've been thinking about Tassie next year. Part of an LSL/Nullarbor crossing/Victoiran/Tasmanian exploring driving tour.

Although now the wife has raised the alternative of some kind of international house sitting idea. Along the lines of living cheaply in SEA or similar for a couple months.

I have a thread?

Was thinking of flying out of Hobart but when I looked at accommodation for 25th - 27th Dec Somerset Pier and Macq01 (on the Dock) and not available. Syd-Hobart yatch race obviously but would have been nice.

If we hang around Launceston, what to do? Is Bay of Fire worth it for a day trip?

Bay of Fires too far for day trip (remember roads aren't built for speed ..). I don't think you are into wineries, so that's out. Lots of historic houses (mansions) within reach ... or even gourmet places .. strawberry farms, chees etc along the NW coast.

Current temp is 10C!!!

Look again.

How many days are you intending to stay? Launceston itself isn't much of a tourist destination, but plenty an hour or two drive away.

The "North-west coast" has lots of fruit orchards and cheese places, and good roads out from Launceston. Pretty scenery, think green hills etc. You could do out to the east coast - Bay of Fires, but if its overcast it largely loses its magic and a lot of driving. Overnighting there or St Helens or even Scamander would be good, and returning via Derby and Scottsdale would be scenic.

I'm assuming Cradle Mountain is a definite. Think about going from there (or to there) down to Hobart via the west coast - Zeehan, Strahan, Queenstown. That's where the scenery is; mountains, lakes, ocean ... ! In a rush you could get to Hobart with just one night there (Zeehan recommended), but I'd recommend two nights; there is heaps to do and see. Gordon River Cruise, Wilderness railway, Hells Gates, Trial Harbour road,

In Hobart, if you want a good place, try the Islington, but it may be booked already too (too many damn visiting yachting millionaires and billionaires!!). There is always Wrest Point of course. Also the Grand Chancellor on the docks, but probably booked already too.

If any of those appeal let me know and we can flesh things out.

In the meantime, check this site out Discover Tasmania No question the best site for planning a trip to Tas. Make sure you scroll down the home page to see the 'regions' map.

We spent a week in south Tassie last year so this trip we'll be keeping it to Launceston/Cradle Mt area. I have a friend thats from Beaconsfield so will be catching up with them while there.

Going to spend 5 nights in the Cradle Mt area so allowed ourselves time to do some exploring a few hours by car so Zeehan ect are great ideas for us to look at. Thanks!

And the Hillberry farm looks like a good stop off on the way to CM, pick some fresh fruit before heading out.
