I'd let the cabin crew know from the get go, that this is a special first time J traveller! I'm sure they will go out of their way to make her feel welcome and comfortable.

Her experience should begin at checkin, they'll probably issue an express path card for Customs, then she can choose if she wants to visit the Lounge before her flight, or enjoy a spot of shopping (get to the airport early and take it all in!)

On board, she'll enjoy a pre departure champagne or juice, an amenity kit, pyjamas, noise cancelling headphones and the most divine seat/bed across the Pacific with a big fluffy doona. Her dining choices are superb and the in-flight bar is a must!

Wish her the very best trip from me!

I'm assuming flight is with VA given it's posted in the VA forum.

Access to the Etihad (corrected from AirNZ) lounge in SYD, and the Etihad lounge in TBIT at LAX.
Coming back at LAX you check-in at T2, then clear security there and bus to TBIT, or check-in T2 then walk to TBIT

as above Etihad lounge, im flying SYD - LAX on august 17th. Been there once, wouldn't say its the best lounge its a little small but nonetheless it is enough for me. Buffet food and a bar. comfy seats. Hopefully should be enough for your daughter. Hope she enjoys!! I'm only in Economy X this trip!

Flying Cathay Pacific? Virgin? Qantas?

It's in the VA thread.

Doesn't necessarily mean the person is flying VA. Plenty of messages are placed in the wrong thread.

Strange that the OP didn't identify the airline in their post.

If she's old enough to have her company pay for her trip she's probably excited to have the learning experience of all first timers - without parental involvement (however well meaning it might be)? The real fun is the anticipation of the unknown.
Just tell her to make sure she has her passport, tickets and some money and leave the rest to her.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, it is a VA flight. I thought there was a VA lounge in SYD, so interesting to hear about the other options. Yes, agree that is could be for her to find out, but AFF is about making the best of things. I did say to her to tell them it is her first VA J flight, and she is alerted to a few things now.

+1 to this.

I remember my first Business class flight after 30 - 40 economy flights and it was amazing and I was glad no one had told me anything and I could just enjoy everything
completely. not knowing we could access the business lounge (we thought it was for business people) then being told at the Qantas club we could head there was pretty
unreal for my partner and I.

Id just suggest she knows the basic entitlements...from check in to baggage to lounge...... I sent my mother and brother to Germany in J using AA miles....and they never realised they had lounges to go to! I didn't think to tell them..... still kicking myself....

Bummer!

My elderly neighbor pays each year to fly J return Sydney-London. She's a dear sweet Pom who still oozes old world class when she flies. But, try as I might - she just refuses to visit a Lounge, use the bed or take advantage of the complimentary amenity kits. She never asks for anything on board, even a blanket. I've told her a thousand times "Say YES to EVERYTHING!" But the old girl sits bolt upright, clutching her handbag like Mary Poppins, all the way from Sydney to Dubai and on to the Motherland.

One of these days, I'm gonna have to accompany her, just so I can bring her up to speed with her entitlements for that $9k investment each year.......

Are they doing table service for the VA flights? I was in the EY lounge at SYD yesterday for the EY 3pm flight and enjoyed a lovely piece of Barramundi. It wasn't obvious they were doing the service, so make sure she asks for a menu if they are, way better than the buffet.
