Currently in Singapore and received a message that our J flight to Helsinki in 11 hours has been cancelled. The e-mail arrived about 3 hours ago and as yet no alternatives have been offered. Much to my horror I have been forced to sign onto Twitter to contact Finnair. We will shortly have to leave the hotel - so no WiFi. Cancellations happen the recovery is what matters - will let you know what goes on.

Good luck OZDUCK. With only one flight a day they will no doubt be scrambling to sort out alternatives.

Likely options would be connections via LHR or TYO with BA/JL.
(AY/JL/BA/IB have a EU-Asia joint business alliance)

I am not too hopeful for anything useful out of them. They replied to my first tweet but nothing since I gave them more information. We are going to have to boook a new hotel as our current one has no vacancies. our next booking in Helsinki is non-refundable as is a ferry trip to Tallin. I will ask Finnair to pay for it but ???. Perhaps another travel insurance claim coming up plus a claim under the EU canx flight rules.

Thanks for the advice, but things now seem to be working out. After being offered economy flights on CX via HK which I refused, we have now been booked onto QATAR with a quick transit in Doha. All in Business - A350 out of Sing and A320 Doha - Helsinki. Their A350 looks better than Finnair and the A320 appears to have lie-flat seats but we will see. Leaving 2 hours earlier and getting in 2 hours later than our original flight. Finnair did offer to pay for a hotel if we stayed overnight in Sing. They were not pro-active at all and I had to chase up a new flight.

I got a bit confused with the timings and we ended up at Changi too early. But it was ok because we mamaged to find the much-talked about staff food hall in the basement of T3. Had some lovely, cheap, Nasi Lemak with Chicken Rendang and my wife had Kuay Teow.ext to me

Currently eating satay in the DNATA lounge (3 hours till departure) and about to get a beer.

ps Dirty socked feet on drinks & snacks table next to me.

Yes it was. I have never had an International flight canx before. I ,stupidly it appears, assumed that after the initial e-mail there would be another saying you have now been booked on xyz or that they would ring me. The first advice said that an updated itinerary would appear on-line under my booking ref - but this never happened. So I tried Twitter with little success and ended up ringing Finland in the end.

My experiences with Finnair were a long time ago but always positive with long delays and cancellations.

Booked in economy on BKK-SIN tag flight and flight was cancelled and at check-in put on LX flight to make my QF connection.

Another time in business for same day return on BKK-HKG-BKK tag flight and there was a 9 hour delay and was given a number of options so chose EK outbound and CX inbound.

The Qatar flights were excellent. The A350 is very nice to fly in - quiet and comfortable. The A320 did have lie flat seats - a bit short for me but as comfortable as you could reasonably expect on a "small" plane.

The cabin crew on both flights were really good, friendly & personable and regularily checking if required anything. The food was also very good and the servings jarge - we knocked back as much as we ate. (altogether a different experience to our long-haul Cx flights)

However I did not think much of Doha Airport - it didn't seem very organi
sed and was a bit grubby for a new facility. We only ran through it for our transit so didn't see the Business Lounge.

I will reserve judgement on Finnair until our next few flights.
