I have an 8 hour layover at DFW this Saturday (effectively abt 6 hours from 1pm to 7pm) and am looking for suggestions on how to fill in the time.

I'll probably hire a car and if its interesting enough might do a report like this :)

there's various malls within a 30min cab ride: northpark or galleria (or even closer to DFW) grapevine mills

uber is quite good in dallas also

Can fill a day at Grapevine mall, if saying at airport hotel they have a shuttle bus to the complex, takes about 15 mins, its massive.

Mrs Lime purchased a fabulous real kid leather white jacket fully lined for a mere $99 at Grapevine, many have asked her where she got it.

Highly recommend visiting the 6th floor museum in downtown dallas. I'm a political and history nut but can spend at least a couple of hours in there and surrounding area.

Back in 2004 we had a 6-7 hour transit at DFW and hired a car and drove into the city, parked it and had a good walk around Dealy Plaza, the Grassy Knoll and did the 6th floor museum...

I have read up quite a bit about JFK's assassination and visiting the actual area was good as it gave me a bit more perspective about the location and what people were writing about rather than just a few disjointed photos...

The train might make it even easier to get in there...

I'm sure there are a few other things to do, on the weekend we were there there was also going to be a big college football game between the Sooners and the Longhorns but you'd have to be pretty lucky to time that if such a game was going to be on... :)

+1 for the excellent 6th floor museum and then standing on the grassy knoll. Perhaps do some research and decide on somewhere for a nice lunch (Southern / BBQ?) first. The art gallery is also worth a visit. Otherwise Downtown Dallas is not a very pleasant place, with no real public spaces and very few pedestrians.

If you choose shopping, the Grapevine Mills mall will easily fill up your whole layover and will have great bargains. I recently had 4 hours to spend at Opry Mills in Nashville, a similar mall, and it really wasn't enough time.

We recently filled a couple of days doing;

JFK/6th Floor museum - better than expected
Trip to Fort Worth and the Kimbell Art museum - the new Piano Pavilion building is a piece of art https://www.kimbellart.org/architecture/piano-pavilion/piano-films-and-images
McKinney Avenue and the free tram - hop on/off, heaps of bars/restaurants
Dallas World Aquarium - better than expected

The driver we had took us past the Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium and spoke about the tour Tours sounded pretty interesting and has good reviews on TA

Thanks so much to you all for those tips. The light rail looks good, but misses a couple of priority places, so I think I'll still hire a car (AA offering 4 x points I think).

For me, sounds like Grapevine Mall (although I'm not much of a shopper), The CA Smith Museum and Dealey Plaza / museum, with the zoo or aquarium if time permits.

I would head to Bass Pro Shop at Grapevine. There may be a bus or similar but a cab would be cheap anyway.

I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say Bass Pro Shops are the greatest in the world. It's like a Anaconda stuffed with a BCF stuffed with a Rays Outdoors stuffed with a Drummond Golf stuffed with a Kathmandu stuffed with BBQs galore. There's an indoor underfloor shooting range, a 3D shooting range, an awesome fish tank, and a steakhouse/brewery and so on. You are in Texas, after all. They don't have it? You don't need it.

Thanks Happy Dude. There is a Bass pro in Calgary and yes, I've been known to spend an afternoon there, muttering "oh my gawd ..." at the displays. The 'cutlery'; the entire row of bags of various animal scents and urine the shotting range; archery range, fishing ... . A temple dedicated to the killing and eating of wildlife.
