Anyone know what a large 4-engine plane (hard to identify at a distance) with 2 fighter jets off the port wing was doing at low altitude over Melbourne at 10:23 today?

And the same three planes have just repeated the flyover in the same direction (N->S) exactly fifteen minutes later.

What gives?

Making a fair bit of noise!

Looked like a Hercules - flew right over here. I assume its a promo for the avalon air show.

I'd say it would be a photo op for the airshow. They gerenally do one every time.

I'll check the wires and see, but my guess it could have been an F/A-18 along with the C-117 Globemaster.

It scared the hell out of me...

It just sounded like a jet was about to crash into my house.

That's it, saw a news flash on the 24 hours TV in our office reception on a new Globemaster arriving. Perhaps timed for a delivery into Avalon? :p

I'd say so as it is listed as one of the flying displays..

I heard the first flyover and saw the second; it definitely wasn't a C-17 Globemaster III (jet engines), so I'm going with a Hercules. I'm not good enough with fighter jets to be able to tell what they were, but they could well have been F/A-18s.

Saw them this morning while walking my dogs in Albert Park. Awesome sight!

As i said, it was a Hercules - or some kind of transport with 4 props. Accompanied by two FA18s - not sure if they were of the standard or super variety.

The Herc has been used in previous events for the Photo op

Its funny you said it was so loud, because I was watching them fly North from where I was in Malvern and didn't hear a thing.

It was very impressive to see, from having absolutely no knowledge about military aircraft I assumed it was some big retro jet followed by two smaller fighter jets, that looked like they were flying so slowly they were about to drop out of the sky.

Have been given some free passes to the Airshow on the weekend so look forward to checking it all out with the kids.

Saw them from level 40 here at 80 Collins St. (Nauru House).

Didn't hear a thing which sucks as there is nothing like a twin engined fighter jet going slow. Unless there are two of them!

Oh, it was a c-130 and two F/A-18's.

yup.. just saw the pics.. was an F/A-18 hornet along with a Super Hornet. Back down on the Herc to allow the photographers to take pics directly out the back. I must get myself on that flight next time!

Wow - the people on this board know everything

Thanks all
