Next week we are heading overseas, departing from Sydney.
As we have quite a bit of luggage I decided to upgrade our
ROK to SYD flights to business class from economy.

There was a warning pop-up that our ROK to BNE flight would be in
economy (no reduction in points) but as it is on a dash-8 we knew
this anyway. This was mainly to save on the extra luggage fees, as we have two pieces
each. We are also not adverse to the extra comfort on the BNE to SYD leg.

Today I noticed that our luggage entitlement is for only one piece each. I
phoned customer help and was advised that due to the size of the plane
I could only have one piece of checked luggage. I was also advised that
I could purchase extra luggage at $30 (a piece) online or $40 at the airport.
Strange that the plane is too small to allow me to have two pieces travelling
business class but quite happy to charge for the the extra bags.

The nice lady that I spoke to even went to ask her supervisor if something
could be done, but to no avail.

I am allowed two bags (each) on the return trip, so I can't figure it out.

I should also add that due to back problems I prefer to take two smallish
bags rather than one extra large one.

That is my rant for today, thanks for taking the time to read it.:)

That sounds unfair as you paid extra to receive J privileges. If pax can pay to add another piece of luggage the airline can't play the 'plane is too small' card and should allow J pax more luggage allowance then standard Y.

Is your return trip operated by a Dash 8 as well?

If you are travelling on any Dash 8 service you are only allowed one piece of checked baggage. Not sure why customer service would suggest you can purchase additional checked baggage allowance at the airport for a Dash 8 flight.

The BNE to ROK leg of my trip home is on a Dash 8. Last time I flew back from SYD (economy) I was allowed to purchase an extra bag allowance at the airport. This covered both flights.

I will probably just use a large carry-on for my extra bag. They will tag it Premium Hand Luggage
and load it in the hold anyway.

I have never had any problems taking 2 bags on a QantasLink Dash-8 (and since I live in CBR most of my int. trips started with a dash-8). And even the Qantas website only states that if you take more than 1 bag (23kg) it may not travel on the same plane.

The baggage allowance page is a little ambiguous.

In relation to connecting flights it states:
If transferring from a Qantas Domestic flight to a Qantas International flight, or vice versa, within 24 hours, the International Baggage Allowance is accepted on both flights. Present both tickets when checking baggage in.

There is an exception table which lists an exception for flights operated by Dash 8 aircraft but it doesn't explicitly state that this is an exception to the connecting flight rule as well as to the general domestic flights allowance table.

I would be arguing strenuously as the greater allowance on the international sectors is rendered nugatory by the lesser allowance on the Dash 8 sector.
And that's simply unreasonable.

I have been on a Dash-8 and have taken golf clubs. Can't quite remember if I was able to check in second bag or if I had carry on.

I am now a regular domestic J to Dash 8 and vice versa pax and never have had an issue at check in. I've even used my full WP allowance without a problem. Probably a bigger issue at the extremes of Dash 8 loung with no readily available diversion thus requiring lots of extra fuel.

Where are you flying to ex SYD &; is it same calendar day?

Are you going off the baggage allowance on the economy eticket before you did the points upgrade?

Is the return flight SYD/BNE/ROK on a separate ticket or is the BNE/ROK leg operated by a B717?
