So my MIL came here about 6 weeks ago and scheduled to head back overseas in May. Unfortunately, her father in law passed away meaning her booking will now need to be changed. Is this a good enough excuse to get it done, will a death certificate suffice and is there a Red Roo replacement on here to help arrange this? Thanks.

Sorry for your family's loss.

Simplistic answer is that's what you have travel insurance for.

Qantas may provide assistance but not guaranteed. As a Plat when I had a similar issue (grandmother passed away as I was on the outbound) occur on a deeply discounted fare I had to pay the fare difference on the return (about $300) but they waived booking and change fees. YMMV.

The Rep has mostly disappeared from these parts so suggest the call centre best.

While I am sure this is the furthest thing from your minds right now, if you know your father-in-law's login details, it might be worth transferring his points before Qantas is informed about the death, as they will wipe the account.

I have a feeling that the FIL would not have a QFF account given the 'back overseas' reference (still reasonable generic advice however).

Qantas anecdotally can be sympathetic in cases like these - the best start is a call to Qantas Customer Service.

I had a similar experience as moa999. My grandmother took a turn for the worst, she was in MEL and I am in PER. I was about to do a PER-ADL-SYD trip for work, called up and changed a flight to get to MEL. Then changed again to get back for the funeral. All up I think I made 3 changes (as well as additional flights) and Qantas only ever charged me fare difference, no change fee or call centre fee. In fact I think I got credit on one flight toward an additional booking.

All in all, I really couldn't have asked for better from them.

Thanks all, QF have been most excellent with handling the situation. No rebooking fees levied and all they've asked for is the differences in fares.

Given SE Asia fares are now extremely cheap, we've ended up buying her another return tix instead.
