Hello - hope I'm posting in the right place! :) Can someone please explain why it's 'okay' for Qantas to charge $568.40 for extra legroom international seats, and then, when my husband and I cancelled because of my father's illness, not refund at least part of the money? We expected some administration costs, but apparently there's no refund at all! They have ample time to resell the seats so it really seems like highway robbery!

While I do not want to defend the Qantas extra legroom seat fee policy, a simple examination of the T & C before you selected the seats would have shown that the fee is not refund if you cancel the booking, or even get upgraded.

It's possible you may be able to make a claim with travel insurance for the seating fee along with other non-refundable travel arrangements.

The travel insurance provider would not pay however if the illness was pre-existing and argue that the circumstances around the cancellation were not 'unforeseen circumstances'.

Yep, I realise the devil's in the details, but it's so frustrating that they can get the money twice!

Yes we intend to make an insurance claim, I just didn't realise that Qantas was so mean! Getting the benefit of the extra legroom charge twice - even three times if the next person cancels! I guess business is business hey?

Aren't the rules displayed upon checkout that the extra legroom seats are non-refundable?

We purchased them through an online travel agency where we'd initially booked our trip, but did the extra legroom over the phone with them. Not through the Qantas website. We weren't advised of the terms and conditions relating to purchase. :( Lesson learned I guess.

Sounds like you need to tell the online travel agency about their responsibility to advise you of relevant T&Cs.

Care to name them?

I have read it that the phone call was to QF. As they may record the phone calls it could be worth requesting the specific phone call from QF to see if that could bring about a change of end result.

Not sure about QF? Sorry is that Qantas? Definitely didn't make the extra legroom booking with Qantas. I spent over two hours on the phone with Qantas trying to do it and ended up being told because it was a group booking through a travel agent (online) it had to be done through the original agent in order to separate our booking.
