Experience with arriving back in OZ and hotel quarantine

I’m stuck in Eritrea under a domestic lockdown but the company I work for is hoping to have expats chartered out to Addis Ababa in a few weeks time. After that I’ll be able to make my way to Brisbane. It will be quite a relief since I’ve been stuck here since January.

Do any AFF Members have any experiences of arriving in Australia in the last few weeks and how was the hotel for the mandatory 14 day quarantine? I need some electronics so were you able to have things delivered to the hotel?

Can’t speak first-hand but publicly available reports suggest:
- poor basic meals / told to order Uber eats if not happy with meal provided - appears to be hotel dependant however
- yes appears delivery (within reason) to hotel wont be an issue
- strict enforcement of detention to room and procedures for any staff interaction

The reports I have read are very variable.
From MEL I have mostly seen negative reports of food quality.
In SYD varies by hotel. The Hilton seems to occur in the bad reports.
Have seen a couple of reports re ADL and they are positive.
Not seen any from the other states but in the NT you have to pay for your hotel and source your own food.

As with everything there will be diametrically opposed reports.

Yesterday's reports from people emerging from 14 days in PER hotels were they felt like it was being like on holiday and aside from being locked in their room really enjoyed their time there. The meals were hotel supplied.

In MEL the reports are varied from horrendous to OK, it appears the food in at least some cases was supplied by hospital caterers rather than the hotel and criticised by quite a few. Some enjoyed their time, some drama queens said it was the worst experience of their lives.

Judging by some of the reports of the food I think I might be tempted to say I was a vegetarian to bypass hamburgers, nachos and chips. A couple I know who have just arrived in MEL have been escorted down to the car park for a walk a couple of times. People not used to having no fresh air at all have found it difficult.

They are having their temperature taken on something like day 3 and day 11 out of 14 days. A nurse phones them every day to see how they’re feeling.

Try getting a flight into Adelaide. The reports were really positive. Good food from restaurants. Entertainment provided by the hotel on TV. Family rooms. Balconies and windows that opened. Those hotels are now empty as of this morning after the first 800 people left. Did not hear of one complaint on the media. Everyone was tested before departure here and a checkup every day.

Apparently depends on hotel. I know one couple on another forum were OK with somewhere near Brisbane and could order what they like but I've read others are saying no deliveries.

I think this was all done in a hurry with a nod and a wink at a national cabinet meeting and implemented in a haphazard rush by 5 different govs with 5 different interpretations. The experience would vary state to state, and as the complaints were raised about some of the silly interpretations of the rules they were adapted along the way.

I would hazard a guess anyone going into hotel imposed isolation this week would have a significantly improved experience than the early guinea pigs. State differences are probably still in place but overall improved.

I think likely the first few days they were overwhelmed with sheer numbers. WA experience has also been positive.

Mr FM overheard a young lass talking to a friend last week when he was shopping, She had been on a working holiday in Canada and he gathered had had a real struggle to get back to Australia. It sounded like she had flown into Sydney, but she was raving to her friend about the hotel she was quarantined in - never stayed in anything so wonderful before and all paid for :). I think it depends a bit on what you are used to :)

Also, it will depend a lot on the hotel management. I'm sure we've all seen how some hotels treat Priceline/Hotwire/etc guests differently to those who book direct, while others care about their reputation and give the same treatment to everyone.
