I have a few friends who are wanting to know something about train travel.

First problem they want from Rome to Paris return on the train? How?
Second problem they want rome to Austria? Once again how?

The site that I have been using is the Swiss Rail site SBB: Home - Online Timetable, Ticket Shop, Online travel shop. I am thinking that your friends' travels from Rome to both Paris & Austria could probably go through Switzerland.

I have found this site to be helpful as far as showing good details of travel options and stations enroute.

In my experience I have tried the Italian rail site and I just don't understand its english.

For fares I usually just buy tickets on the day from the station. Do allow time for this as the windows are often busy.

Another consideration is that the trip from Rome to Paris by rail will be about about 12 hours, by air it can be 2 hours and cost less.

When I travelled with my mum in Germany, we simply rocked up to the train station and they gave us all the information, then booked everything for us. Should be the same for your friends.

this is the website i use for all my Europe train planning. Not sure on the Rome to Paris trip but I'd guess the best option is via Milan.

For Rome to Austria there is one train that goes once per day Rome to Munich this is the best option to get to Austria, with a change most likely in innsbruck. Which part of Austria do you need? Basically this is an all day trip to Munich, and to Salzburg where I have taken it to.

On cost you need to compare the price of the individual routes. But I'd recommend getting a eurorail pass, as this is kinda cheap and it gets you into first class. But you'd probably need to book. There are versions of the pass That allow 5 days travel in 30 days.

Ohh and Swiss rail website (sbb) and French rail (sncf) are both good. Train Italy to Austria definitely does not go via Switzerland. And i think the best option Rome to Paris would be via Milan and then into the south of France to get on the high speed network through avignon. This is from my memory of planning nice to Rome.
