Hi all,

Can I have some recommendations on the brand and size of suitcase for travelling on trains and getting to accom from train stations via the streets in europe.
Thinking 68cm max....recommend smaller?
Just clothes and basics carrying....for 7 weeks.

We did some Euro train travel earlier this year and used carry-on sized rolly bags. These were quite manageable and TBH I think anything bigger would have been a giant pain in the bum. Especially in places where you might walk a km from the station to your hotel over cobblestones. And some Euro apartment staircases- strewth!

If you have a soft rolly bag that is extendable that should be fine. You should only really need a week's worth of clothing (when dirty just find a Laundromat), and the extension means you can still fit in a few souvenirs. Bigger souvenirs, find a post office and send them home. If you really really need to travel with more stuff, bring a small backpack too that doubles as a day bag.

I did a trip like that and just took a big hard-shell case, no particular brand from an outlet store somewhere. It was a winter trip so there was a chance of having to roll it through snow or rain (both happened). It was fine, maybe a little bit coughbersome on smaller trains without luggage racks. I never left it on a rack unless I was sitting right near, by the way. Be careful with that.

I used the same case on my trip to Iceland and Scandinavia in winter last January. It was hard rolling it through deep snow and slush, but it worked and everything stayed dry. I carried a small backpack too. The case was large but not very heavy.

I find a combination of

17" laptop / mobile office roller bag + backpack to take on the flight. Always have a full change of clothes in the bag in case of checked in luggage not arriving or mishap while on board. Forget hard case bags as they'r ea pain to open. The mobile office has a nice padded laptop area which is easy to get to when going through security.

55cm expandable carry on bag that I check in.

Having 2 small bags makes getting up stairs relatively easy as you're more balanced

The 17" bag has a strap on the back that slides over the 55cm bag handle so only have to drag one bag most of the time.

as for brands, I've found delsey to be a good trade off between quality and price. I can do 10-12 flights in a year, too often on budget airline intra asia hops, and the delsey bag has survived pretty well for 3 years so far.
